The most shocking death of a favorite TV character...?
Mine: Jenny Calendar from Buffy. When Angel snapped her neck I cried.

It seems that Buffy's writers always killed off characters I really liked. Jenny, Mom, Tara and even Jonathan.

The latter was about a radio show, though. (Yes, I know you were kidding.)

Another vote for Henry Blake, by the way.

42. Stevenson & Harvey Korman...
Korman left the Carol Burnett Show in the same year the Stevenson left M*A*S*H. Korman later joked that the pair shared a special Emmy award that year for "really stupid career moves."

Just thought of another ... When the family and friends of James on "Good Times" were celebrating and partying his home-comming from I think it was a far away job and Florida gets a telegram saying he'd been killed.

36. That Good Times episode was very shocking.

And very well acted by the cast. They did a great job of portraying that kicked-in-the-gut feeling when they received the news, and in the immediate aftermath. Even ol' JJ "Dy-no-mite" did a good job.

I'd go with Henry Blake for my vote, but that Good Times one was pretty good, too.

16. Henry Blake
Saw it when it originally aired when I was in 2nd grade. We debated at school the next day whether McLean Stevenson died, or was it just the character.

Found out a few years later that it was just McLean Stevenson's career that died.

Most absurd death: George Costanza's fiancé dying because she licked too much toxic glue on the wedding invitation envelopes.

Sorry, but Maude seemed to be generally useless in terms of any storyline or plot points. Although, I guess Homer did find her hot which helped generate the marriage retreat episode.

Hell, even the death of Bumblebee Man would be more meaningful than Maude's.

73. Jean Stapleton was PISSED about it.
She didn't want to sign to continue the show, which at that time was now called "Archie Bunker's Place".

Norman Lear then said that they would kill off Edith, but wanted her to come back just to play the final shows.

She refused and said "I'm not coming back to die for him".

Lear made a huge mistake by doing this. The show should have not stayed on the air that long.

49. That was one of my favorite episodes....
Joss Whedon always had a habit of making sure that no good deed went unpunished on "Buffy." Jenny Calendar had the whole "serving the gypsy curse" thing; but Joyce and Tara had something in common: the lack of moral ambiguity faced by Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles.

Joyce and Tara were simply good people, caught up in this war against the minions of hell. They were truly innocent bystanders, and it was they who were chosen to pay. The four "core Scoobies" all lost loved ones (Giles lost Jenny, Buffy lost her mother, Willow lost Tara, and Xander lost Anya), and therefore suffered more greatly than if they had died themselves.

As much as I love his shows; Whedon's really kind of a sick fuck, with the way he inflicts such sadistic abuse on the characters he loves the most. ;)
