No, no, no, no, NO! *sob*
I am in a degree program where not all of my classes are held at U. of I's Champaign/Urbana campus; two are held in Charleston, on the EIU campus. Both of those classes are held in Blair Hall, which was gutted by fire yesterday afternoon.

**********************************************************************

BLAIR BURNS

Flames raged through Blair Hall Wednesday afternoon, destroying Eastern's third oldest building, resulting in class cancellations for the night and chaos throughout the campus and city. The roof collapsed onto the building's third story, where stone arches were the only architecture visible because of fire, smoke and water damage.

**********************************************************************

According to the local TV news, most professors grade records were destroyed in the fire. I have no idea what the solution will be, and I had 'A's going in both my classes...

*sigh* :(

1. Where I taught, profressors kept their own grade books
and took them home with them. I'd be really surprised if your profs have no idea what your grade was and didn't have copies.

They were probably hard copy records of grades from previous semesters (which should be on computer anyway)or they are teaching evaluations of the professors themselves.

I'm sorry to hear about the destruction of the building and the inconvenience, but I wouldn't worry too much.

2. How terrible!
Was it arson?

I hope it works out for you. Maybe at this late date they'll just give everyone As (well, it happens in the movies!)

3. Oh geez, that just sucks paddy
I hope the professor took his/her grades home with him/her. It would be a shame if you had to repeat an entire semester after working so hard.

Sorry about the building.

6. Fingers are crossed for you
Hope that your professors had got up-to-date copies off-site.

My son's school had a fire a few months ago that took out both the
maths block and the design/technology block. It was bad enough that
all that new equipment was trashed but then we realised that all of
the display work had gone as well ... not much from my son's class
(as they're only ~13yrs) but all of the final year kids stuff that
has to be submitted as part of their portfolio for their GCSE exams.

Best of luck, I appreciate how gut-wrenching it must be for you at
the moment.

8. Buildings burning down usually suck
Sorry to hear about it. I'm sure the whole student population, and teachers/admnistration, will be feeling this loss for a while.

9. I didn't realize you were at UIUC!
For some reason, I had you and Cuban Liberal mentally placed over by Springfield! I guess I never stopped to think about where you were going to school...

Shoot, we may have to meet for coffee sometime, and now I know who to call for protests and pickets!!!! :)

12. Yes--the fire was at Eastern.

But if I read his post correctly, he implied some of his classes were at UIUC...

"I am in a degree program where not all of my classes are held at U. of I's Champaign/Urbana campus; two are held in Charleston, on the EIU campus..."

That was what had me delighted. :)

13. That severly sucks. I hope records are backed-up.
In this day and age, there is no reason why professor's can't keep grades backed-up somewhere. So I hope that is the case. I guess we'll find out in the next couple of days which professors joined the digital age. No one should be made to retake a semester because some professor couldn't take 15 minutes to do some data entry.

14. Update: basically good news
One of my professors exported his data to his home computer every evening before he went home, so he has all my grade records (thank you, Dr. B!); my other professor did not, however, so we either have to provide copies of all exams and papers, or go with 'his best recollection'. Fortunately, I'm anal about records, etc., so I have all of mine.

Whew! Dodged the bullet. :)

At their homes, maybe.

Common sense, just in case.
