2. There's plenty of men is this day and age
Who may not have the nerve to say this stuff, but they sure can give you an impression that this is what they expect from their wives.

4. That was even funny in 1955!
You think feminism just emerged fully-formed one fine spring day in 1968 or somethin'?

7. "you have no right to question him"
"Remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours"

The sad thing is that some people are still living in 1955.

8. back then I was saying things like this:

'I didn't want to have female children because I didn't want to bring another woman into this male run world'

to my mother's female club members. which prompted nervous titters.

grief, the shit they used to write in those women's magazines.

9. Fake magazine clipping... according to Snopes.com
The sentiments expressed in this clipping are rather stereo-typical of the '50s, but the clipping itself is a fake.

An image purported to be a digitized photocopy of the 13 May 1955 edition of a magazine called Housekeeping Monthly circulates with this message, but the graphic is a fake, created by simply adding text around a 1950s-era magazine graphic. (The image itself even bears an "Advertising Archives" legend along its side.)

The full article is here...

11. No. It's real. I wrote it.
I travelled back in time purely to write this article so I would have something to talk about while bored in the afternoon on April 28th 2004.

10. I don't doubt that the sentiment is real,
Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 01:21 PM by TN4Gore
but is this actual document real? I've seen it so many times, and only since the internet, that I doubt it

on edit: didn't see previous reference to snopes

12. This would be hilarious if
it hadn't warped a whole generation. A little historical perspective: in 1955, most women were housewives, either by choice or by default, and these "tips" were intended to help them keep their jobs. The most unsettling thing about the article is the language of subservience--and it compares quite closely with the advice of conservatives like Dr. Laura. How far we've come! And how precarious our position even now. Get those @#$%^ conservatives out of the White House, the Supreme Court, and Congress unless you fancy a return to the days of deciding which nice starched apron you'll wear when your Lord and Master returns to you at the end of the day.
