1. We gave both of ours fairly original first names
and very traditional middle names, in case they hate their first names.

2. My boss...
His daughter is named Piper, after his airplane (seriously) I guess his wife was REALLY doped up after giving birth.

His is named Marqiese, but they say it Marcus, IF HIS NAME IS MARCUS, SPELL IT M-A-R-C-U-S!

Those two are going to have a blast when they start school.

6. I hate hate hate hate
name bastardization

WHY WHY WHY all the "y's" ???

Has there been some undercover, stealth PR done by the letter Y in the past few years? It seems to have crept up into every name possible

Ashley---is now:
Ashlee
Ashleigh
Ashleygygh
Ayshleigheyeeeeeee

Nicole---is now:
Nycole
Nychohole (I swear I've seen the name spelled like that)

Like, I swear it's only a matter of time before something as un-'y'-like as Heather would be spelled Heythyergh or something...it's disturbing

Don't parents understand that a 5 year old, learning to spell their name for the first time, is going to have a REALLY REALLY REALLY hard time spelling something like Kayleeyeeghgyyeee or Ayshlhyee..

it's child abuse..well, it's not, but it's darn cruel at any rate

Check out this website--it's HILLARIOUS!!!

Baby's named a bad, bad thing:

http://www.notwithoutmyhandbag.com/babynames/index.html

SOme of their names:
Egwene.
Kellyna Nychole, Taryn Mykah and Mykenzie Kathryn
brayden,makynzi,or karsyn

Jayln Marie
Ammie Lynne
Kesleigh Abigail
Cydnee Elizabeth
McKayla Mercy
Nikola Kate
Quinn Allyse (or Elise)
Madaline Sarai (not sara)
kaitlyne Nicole
Tayler Emmaleigh

7. oh come on. . .
kids are far more tolerant and accepting than they were when we were kids. My kid has a really bizarro surname from his father so I tried to give him a relatively normal first name, which promptly got morphed into an unusual nick name. Kids wanted to hang out with him cause his name was so cool. Now he's pubescant and it is still not a problem.

8. My mother's cousin won't even speak to his son
because he named his son "Seven." In fact, he won't even say the name. He just says, "a number between six and eight."

I think nicknames are quite different. They usually come about in association with a personality trait, so I really like them. But yes, have a normal spelling. I like Isiah Thomas and Earvin Johnson, but I always want to call them "I-Zi-Ah" and EEERvan.

Elizabeth Ashley was on one of the late night shows during the 1992 elections, and referred to Gennifer Flowers as "Ghen-ifer" (hard 'g'.) The host tried to correct her, but she just said, if she's going to spell it that way, I'm going to call her Ghenifer!

15. Some of them are quite normal.
"Connor" (and variants Conner and Conor) are good Irish names. "Turner" is another acceptable Anglo-Saxon name, and coming into more common use.

"Gabrielle?" Do you only have a problem with this one because of Xena?

Personally, I hate the person in our town who named her twins Lemonjello and Orangejello. Pump enough drugs into a woman in the hospital, and cuisine starts taking on whole new aspects.

19. My wife is pregnant. I want to name the kid Frodo. She disagrees :\
C'mon, Frodo is a COOL name!

I wanted to name my first daughter Cilia, but my wife knew a bit too much about biology and shot that one down, giving my daughter a plain, ordinary name with a plain, ordinary spelling. I wanted to name my second son Berthold Davin after my grandfather, but my wife overruled that one saying it was too "wierd"...he got a plain, ordinary name too.

This is my last chance to have an oddly named child. If I fail this time, I'll go to my grave disappointed :(

27. I hate unique names!
For some reason it is my pet peeve.

Worst creative spelling of a normal name: Tiphaniey (Tiffany)

Worst creative spelling/unique name combo: Xzult (exalt), Simphoniey (Symphony)

Names that will force a child to become a stripper: Leather, Pleather, Chocolate, Dakota, Montana, Raven, Celestial

For some reason this is my least favorite: Colten

36. But the kid
will spell it in many funky ways once they hit, oh say, 5th or 6th grade.

On the other hand, I completely understand where you are coming from. I've had authors complain about mispellings of their names on cover comps (pre-final versions), and have had to bite my tounge hard to avoid saying, "Well we wouldn't have had any trouble if you spelled 'Shilli' the right way, "Shelley!" True story!
