Favorite LOVE SONG ever
As I have to mention more and more, don't worry about the fact that your opinion on this will change from minute to minute, hour to hour, day to day. If you change your mind, just post another song to the thread. We'll still love you, honest.

For me, I'm sure about my choice, so sure that it's set in stone. It's "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby" by Alison Krauss. No, wait, wait, it's "Heartstrings," also by Alison. Hmm, no, I think it's "North Dakota" by Lyle Lovett. Wait, wait, I'm pretty sure it's "When I Fall In Love" by Miles. (Yeah I know there aren't any words. Sue me.) Nope, it's definitely "Carolyn" by Steve Wynn. Either that or "I Have Faith" which he did with the Dream Syndicate. Unnnnnh, no, definitely "Valentine's Day" by Steve Earle. Then again, it might be "Gringo Honeymoon" by Robert Earl Keen or "Our Lady of the Highways" by John Wesley Harding. But anyway it's most certainly set in stone! :)

76. a very sad story about that song...
a soldier that fought in Afghanistan played "It makes no difference" before killing himself. I don't know if I'll be able to listen to it anymore, it was a sad enough song already.

11. True Companion - Marc Cohn
True Companion Lyrics

Sponsored Link: 100% Legal MP3 Downloads

Baby I've been searching like everybody else
Can't say nothing different about myself
Sometimes I'm an angel
And sometimes I'm cruel
And when it comes to love
I'm just another fool
Yes, I'll climb a mountain
I'm gonna swim the sea
There ain't no act of God girl
Could keep you safe from me
My arms are reaching out
Out across this canyon
I'm asking you to be my true companion
True companion
True companion

So don't you dare and try to walk away
I've got my heart set on our wedding day
I've got this vision of a girl in white
Made my decision that it's you allright
And when I take your hand
I'll watch my heart set sail
I'll take my trembling fingers
And I'll lift up your veil
Then I'll take you home
And with wild abandon
Make love to you just like a true companion
You are my true companion
I got a true companion
True companion

When the years have done irreparable harm
I can see us walking slowly arm in arm
Just like the couple on the corner do
'Cause girl I will always be in love with you
And when I look in your eyes
I'll still see that spark
Until the shadows fall
Until the room grows dark
Then when I leave this Earth
I'll be with the angels standin'
I'll be out there waiting for my true companion
Just for my true companion
True companion
True companion

18. I can't even listen to "The Scientist" (or any Coldplay) because
it reminds me too much of my breakup with my ex-girlfriend - that song is absolutely heart wrenching. I really love Coldplay - I hope someday I'll be able to listen to them again. As far as happy love songs go - I know it's corny but I still like Elton John's "Your Song".

19. Same with me
Romeo and Juliet reminds of my breakup with my ex-fiance (except for the movie star part). But I guess I'm a glutton for punishment, cause I still que it up whenever my mind happens to drift back to her.

Mine was in 1986 in college. I can finally listen to it again. There for awhile, I couldn't go near it.

Same with "Why" by Annie Lennox for a later breakup.

23. DESCENDENTS - Clean Sheets
Clean sheets mean a lot. To a guy who sleeps on the floor. I wanted your love, and a shelf in your dresser drawer. you tucked me in, stopped my tossing and turning. But I turned back the covers and saw those sheets are dirty. Even thought you'll never come clean you know it's true. Those sheets are dirty, And so are you. The warmth of a bed, to a guy who sleeps on the floor. Was enough to perpetuate all the lies I heard before. I want to hold you, I'll hold my pillow instead, Cause my pillow will never lie or be with a stranger in my bed. Where's the love I was looking for. It's out the door. I'm afraid to see you anymore so it's back on the floor. Cause those sheets are dirty. Woke up this morning alone on the floor. Thinking about those clean sheets and the way it was before. When I looked in the mirror, I saw your face and thought of the past. But now I know how dirty you are, I took my fist and smashed the glass. Those sheets are dirty and so are you..

This song got me through my first failed relationship.

26. Rainy Night in Soho by the Pogues
Incredible lyrics.

Here they are ---

I've been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways
We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into Heaven
Some of them fell into Hell

I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms
On a rainy night in Soho
The wind was whistling all its charms
I sang you all my sorrows
You told me all your joys
Whatever happened to that old song
To all those little girls and boys

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
But there's a light I hold before me
And you're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

Sometimes I wake up in the morning
The gingerlady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I hear you talking in my head
I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the fist time
I never think about the last

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

30. "Mystery"...The Manhattan Transfer
Anita Baker does a good rendition too...

Mystery
words and music: Rod Temperton (1983)

Turning back the hands of time
Holding on to misty memories
Chasing shadows through the night
Trying to find my happy ending

Reaching out for another chance at heaven
We could still find a way if we try

chorus:
Baby, believe in the mystery
Like it used to be
We were more than lonely drifters in the dark
I can remember the sun inside
Love held us tight
I need to feel your magic in my heart
Instead of it tearing us apart

Diamonds shining in the night
Lying soft and warm together
Only images survive
Can't my dreams go on forever

Oh there's still time to lock away your sadness
Let the secret's of love start to smile

chorus:
Baby, believe in the mystery
Like it used to be
Baby bring back all the passion to my heart
I can remember all the tender days, all the love we made
Can't you see in me your magic here tonight

Lonely spirits seem to whisper in the wind
It's a silent song that's never meant to be
Since the dawn of time the mystery never ends
We could find forever if we let love rise again

Tell me why can't we reach for another chance at heaven,
We can still find the way if you try

chorus:
Baby, believe in the mystery
Like it used to be
Baby, bring back all the passion to my heart
I can remember the tender days, all the love we made
I need to feel your magic here tonight

Baby, believe in the mystery
Like it used to be
More than lonely drifters in the dark
We were so much more
Sun inside...sun inside
Love held us tight
Need to feel you, baby

52. Second Avenue - Art Garfunkel
Since we can no longer make it, girl,
I found a new place to live my life.
It's really no place at all,
Just a hole in the wall, you see.
It's cold and dusty but I let it be,
Livin' here without you,
On Second Avenue.
And since our stars took different paths,
I guess I won't be shavin' in your looking glass.
Guess my old friendly grin,
Must have started to dim, somehow,
And I certainly don't need it now,
Still, I keep smiling through,
On Second Avenue.
I can still see you standing
There on the third-floor landing.
The day you visited we hardly said a word.
Outside it was rainin',
You said you couldn't be stayin,
And you went back to your flowers and your birds.
Since we can no longer see the light
The way we did when we kissed that night,
Then all the things that we felt,
Must eventually melt and fade,
Like the frost on my window pane
Where I wrote, "I Am You,"
On Second Avenue.

62. Beautiful - Gordon Lightfoot
Beautiful lyrics and beautiful music.

At times I just don't know
How you could be anything but beautiful
I think that I was made for you
And you were made for me
And I know that I will never change
Cause we've been friends through rain or shine
For such a long, long time

Laughing eyes and smiling face
It's seems so lucky just to have the right
Of telling you with all my might
You're beautiful tonight

And I know that you will never stray
Cause ya been that way from day to day
For such a long, long time

And when ya hold me tight
How could life be anything but beautiful
I think that I was made for you
And you were made for me

And I know that I will never change
Cause we've been friends through rain or shine
For such a long, long time

And I must say that it means so much to me
Just to be the one who's telling you
I'm telling you
That you're beautiful

That favorite could also change by the minute. I like every tune on Forever Changes. But that's just me.

78. Kayleigh by Marillion
written by Derek William Dick (AKA Fish)

Do you remember chalk hearts melting on a playground wall
Do you remember dawn escapes from moon washed college halls
Do you remember the cherry blossom in the market square
Do you remember I thought it was confetti in our hair
By the way didn’t I break your heart?
Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart
So sorry, I never meant to break your heart
But you broke mine

Kayleigh is it too late to say I’m sorry?
And kayleigh could we get it together again?
I just can’t go on pretending that it came to a natural end

Kayleigh, oh I never thought I’d miss you
And kayleigh I thought that we’d always be friends
We said our love would last forever
So how did it come to this bitter end?

Do you remember barefoot on the lawn with shooting stars
Do you remember loving on the floor in belsize park
Do you remember dancing in stilettoes in the snow
Do you remember you never understood I had to go
By the way, didn’t I break your heart?
Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart
So sorry, I never meant to break your heart
But you broke mine

Kayleigh I just wanna say I’m sorry
But kayleigh I’m too scared to pick up the phone
To hear you’ve found another lover to patch up our broken home

Kayleigh I’m still trying to write that love song
Kayleigh it’s more important to me now you’re gone
Maybe it will prove that we were right
Or ever prove that I was wrong

81. My choices
"Whole Again" by Atomic Kitten-I know most of their stuff is recycled manufactured pap but that song holds a very special significance for me. It first debuted during a period of time where every aspect of my life was absolutely wonderful and I feel very nostalgic when I hear that song and I find it to be a very powerful ballad

Also
(1) Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You
(2) Wonderful Tonight-Eric Clapton
(3) Unchaimed Melody-The Righteous Brothers
(4) Crossroads-Don McLean
(5) Save The Best For Last-Vanessa Williams
(6) Falling In Love Again-Sammy Lemer and Fredrick Hollander

I'll probably think of more as time progresses but that's all I can think of at the present time
