1. a quick question: has any prof demanded MLA format intrinsically,
instead of mandating MLA to get us "adjusted" and "in shape" for some future hypothetical

4. Try J-Stor
full text academic articles. Bet there's something on literacy rates in there for you.

Probably something in Lexis-Nexis for that matter.

5. LexisNexis kicks ass for finding news articles
Hell, Franken relied on it to rip apart Ann the Man's claims.

9. The problem with LexisNexis...
When I typed in my search criteria (American literacy rates), I got a metric shitload of articles from Pakistan. :wtf:

10. you can limit your search
do your search under "general news" and choose major newspapers for starters. you can even search specific publications.

7. J-Stor ain't giving me shit eaither.
I did find one article that I could possibly use. I like the fact that they're all stored there so I don't have to go and interloan copies of the articles (which can take a while)

8. yeah, even if it's not giving you a lot for this
it's a great resource to know about for the future

jogging my brain, there was another one called something like: America, history and life, or something like that. Also Periodicals Content Index (PCI) is pretty decent.

You may want to take a look at census information. Literacy is undoubtedly one of the things they take a look at.

You should try calling the reference desk at the New York Public library as well. They answer questions about pretty much anything and will know how to point you in the right direction.
