I’m on a low-carb diet and would kill for a piece of chocolate cake.

And a glass of milk. Stop me before I consume again! (Sort of a take off on a slasher movie.)

1. Is there chocolate cake and milk within easy reach?
If so, back away from it. Slowly.

And exactly "who" would you kill for it?

5. I'd prefer a glass of merlot, thank you.
In fact.....

And I can't remember the last time I ate dessert.

2. I know the feeling...
been on it myself for a couple weeks.

In a pinch, there are low-carb chocolate bars that don't suck. They help. Also, the Atkins ice cream is bearable.

6. Thanks and hang in there.
At the moment I am hallucinating over a many layered cake encased in gooey chocolate icing. So big that a piece would overpower the plate and a large glass of cold milk, hell forget the glass just refrigerate the cow.

9. In the past, when I've done this
I pick one day a week (saturday, usually) and allow myself a good treat. Last week it was SUPPOSED to be a sandwich from my favorite sub place, but they were closed... sigh. So I had a small frozen yogurt.

give yourself the occasional treat - it won't kill you, and it makes the diet a lot more bearable.

4. bittersweet chocolate is your friend
I've been low-carbing for two years, and I always have bittersweet chocolate on hand. I have a handful of that and the sweettooth goes away.

Go get yourself a really good bsw bar or baking chocolate.

If you have cake in the house, leftovers, or some such, eat it up and don't buy anymore for a good long while. I've learned that it's better to go ahead and have a little piece than to deny yourself and wind up overeating later.

7. Umm... stupid question..
Why not just eat a piece of cake and have a glass of milk?

Life is too short and a piece of cake won't kill you...

17. i am doing lo carb too
I do give myself reward meals about twice a month. Usually I go for Indian or Chinese binges. Allowing yourself these opportunities every once in a while is ok in my book. There are some good low carb brownie mixes that you might want to keep on hand when this craving attacks again---and you know it will

18. Find a chocolate cake recipe....
substitute almond flour for regular flour
and use Splenda instead of sugar Also use
unsweetened chocolate. It should come out
pretty good. You can buy almond flour at
health food stores or make your own by pulverizing
almonds into a flour, some people use a coffee
grinder. For topping you can use no sugar
puddings.

You can use watered down cream instead of milk
for a beverage. Some stores are selling low
carb milk now but you will have to look at labels
to find it.

19. Here is a simple recipe...
but there are others out there on low carb
recipe sites.

4 eggs
1/2 cup Splenda
1 cup coarsely chopped almonds
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons almond flour
1 tablespoon baking soda
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Separate egg whites from yolks.
In a blender blend the whites and Splenda.
Continuing blending, add nuts, vanilla, almond flour,
soda, yolk, cocoa one at a time.
Blend for 2 minutes more.
Put in a small greased (buttered) cake pan and
bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

Top with no sugar pudding

24. Didn't the inventor of that diet, die of a massive heart attack while
at an obese weight of 270 pounds...And the only ones disputing this are his widow and publisher (both still making gobs of money off his books).

Too much FAT in a diet can never be healthy!

not even close.

He died after falling on the ice and hitting his head.

He HAD suffered from a viral heart infection the previous year, but nobody claims it was diet-related. He did gain weight as a result of the heart condition, but he had maintained a very healthy weight for most of his adult life.

The truth is, we don't KNOW that fat is bad. Last year, after being on Atkins for only a month, my bad cholesterol dropped drastically, my good cholesterol doubled and my triglycerides were cut by two-thirds.

I think the link between dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol is very tenuous.

29. Re: the weight gain... why do people make this shit up?
Edited on Mon Apr-12-04 10:19 PM by supernova
Whoever started this vicious meme should be hogtied and boiled in hot oil... preferrable bacon grease. :argh: :nuke:

Robert Atkins died as a result of a head injury caused by a fall on the icy sidewalk outside his office.

The weight gain was due to steroids and water retention.

He did have a viral infection of the heart a few years ago which left him with cardiomyopathy, a general, progressive weakening of the heart muscle which can be controlled with medication.
We will never know the extent to which his existing heart condition contributed to his death.

But,

his diet had nothing to do with it.

30. thanks supernova
isn't it interesting? The diet police take this stuff VERY personally, it seems. It's hard to imagine exactly why the Atkins diet brings out such strong emotions in people.

Atkins was vilified in life and death. But recent research shows he was onto something very important.

When you've been on the low carb jag as long as I have, it feels like you've eaten a whole cake.
