Is DU censored where you work?
Edited on Tue Dec-30-03 08:10 PM by The Zanti Regent
It really ticks me off.

Our computer system has internet access, but I cannot access DU on it, even if I just want to look at the Latest Breaking News board.

I cannot access Buzzflash.

I cannot look at American Politics

I cannot look at Michael Moore.com

I cannot look at Bartcop.

I cannot look at Media Whores Online.

I cannot look at the Daily Howler.

I cannot access The Nation.

I cannot look at the Onion.

I cannot access the BBC.

I cannot read the UK Guardian

But I can look at Free Republic

I can look at Drudge.

I can look at Fox News.

I can look at MSNBC.

I can look at USA Today.

The Washington Times shows up real nice.

So does the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

I can even look at the 700 Club.

Are you also the victim of a computer network that has the "RIGHT" Programming?

2. Ye Gods!
Yikes, dude! Happily, I work in the liberal media, so I can get access to any damn site I please at work. Heck, theoretically I could even check out porn -- though it would eventually catch up with me and I'd probably get canned.

Mayhaps it's time to seek gainful employment at another locale?

On another note... aahhh... My first post on DU, having lurked as a guest here for months. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Cheers.

3. Why are you surfing the net at work?
Do you want to get fired? I don't touch the net anymore while at work. Never fired because of it, but it just doesn't make any sense.

8. Many people are allowed to surf at work.
My boss is fine with it, that makes sense to me. I get my work done, I get treated like a grown up.

7. No, my service provider is fine on that score.
But I have run across this problem trying to forward Information Clearinghouse to friends on AOL:

Your message was rejected by mailin-02.mx.aol.com for the following reason:

TRANSACTION FAILED: (HVU:B1) The URL contained in your email to AOL members has generated a high volume of complaints.?? Per our Unsolic

The following recipients did not receive this message:

So now AOL is scanning incoming mail for fascist political correctness?

9. I keep waiting for it...
My school pays for a firewall. We can add sites to it for blocking, but we typically rely on the company to provide "filtering" for us. So, I'm waiting for when the filter people realize that we are getting "bad news" and lock me out.

There are mirrors for BartCop; have you tried those yet?

Also - someone tell me if I'm wrong, I recall reading several articles detailing how some "content control" sites and programs pay people to surf and find "bad" content, and the people who surf tend to be more conservative, which leads to more liberal content blocked than conservative content. I know the corporate higher-ups don't really have a problem blocking "our" sites themselves, but it seems they get help with it from their employees.

Anybody else remember this?

10. Answering Captain Sunshine
In answer to your query, Cap'n, there are a whole slew of organizations that compile lists of objectionable websites so that they can be incorporated into the censored sites of companies who get those lists.
Most of these are for pornography and other obvious targets, but there are lists whose sole purpose is to block liberal sites. There's also ones that list as many conservative sites as possible, though these are grossly outnumbered.
A smart webmaster for a liberal site will have a few mirrors ready for such occasions.

13. Try this site
for encrypted anonymous surfing:

http://www.the-cloak.com/anonymous-surfing-home.html

You can use it for a bit each day for free. If your admin hasn't blocked this site, then you can go anywhere....without prying eyes.
