I'm watching an old WWII flick named "Attack". In case you're not familiar with it, it stars Eddie Albert as a line commander who hides in his nice, comfortable nest in the village, slowly drinking himself into oblivion as he gives orders that send men to needless death on the line. I could jump ahead to the end and tell you the soldiers finally shoot him to death for the misery he's caused so many good men, but I don't like to reveal the ends of movies.
This begs the questions-- will there be a glorious action movie about the war in Iraq, and if so, who will star in it? Ahnold? But he's just a generation removed from the Nazis himself, and he's not even American. And he never will be, no matter how much money he flings toward the White House.
Mel Gibson? Same problem-- he's Austrailian. He has no real business in OUR business. Bruce Willis? This particular chickenhawk has already starred in so many WWII war flicks that his presence has worn real thin. I don't think he could do "The Hunt For Saddam" any real justice, and make it sing.
Funny how noone has ever done a real good movie about Iraq-- even Desert Storm, where it appears that an entire generation of soldiers served, has gone largely unnoticed by Hollywood, unless you count such properties as "The Three Kings", and one or two other eminintly forgettable flicks. No real glory reflected there. No real heroes emerged from that bloodbath, discounting Stormin' Norman, who I still can't figure out what he did aside from voice over videos of exploding buildings for the press. Doesn't exactly raise him to the level of McArthur or Patton, now, does it.
Afghanistan? Nothing there but endless assaults on the sides of mountains, and by the way, we're still there, the warlords are still in charge, and Osama is STILL MISSING IN ACTION. No action movie to be gotten from THAT front!
So, back to Iraq, Redeaux. See the flag waving over any cities there yet? See all those hearts and minds dancing around the soldiers yet? Nope, not just yet-- they're all still recovering from the Shock And Awe-- those heady days and nights of long-distance, remote controlled firebombing ala Dresden, that really didn't end up shocking OR aweing too many people. In fact, when the smoke cleared, all it did was leave cities in ruin, endless civilians with grave injuries, a lack of electricity and water, and cholera, along with all the other diseases and afflictions attendant to a merciless attack upon an innocent population.
"Mission Accomplished on May 1, 2003"-- Is the electricity restored yet? Is the water system restored? Are the hospitals operational (and don't get me started about the hospital that was deliberately savaged in the so-called "rescue" of a certain blonde with amnesia)? Do they love us yet? Nope, but look to the right-- the oil wells are safe and secure! Hallelieuja!! Mission accomplished, Halliburton! Yeppir!
Are our soldiers well-fed, happy, clean, organized, and efficient? Aside from midnight raids on civilian dwellings, ordered by commanders who hide in their nice, comfortable nests in the villages, slowly drinking themselves into oblivion as they give orders that send men to needless death on the line (okay, so I took a license, so sue me), shooting to death women, children, and crippled old men, it would appear not. AND WHERE'S SADDAM? "Missed by less than 24 hours", it would seem. But hey, at least we got his sons, by God! (Excuse me, that should be "By Allah"...)
Nope, I guess there won't be much of an action movie made from all this when it's over, after all. Oops, I keep forgetting. Mission Accomplished. May 1. Done and DONE.
Movie's over. Time for bed, if I can sleep...
