Daughter of slain Iraqi leader: US helped Saddam quash 1993 coup attempt
The daughter of a prominent Iraqi opposition leader, who was assassinated in Beirut by Saddam Hussein's secret service in 1994 said she would sue the ousted Iraqi president before three international courts, charging that the U.S. was a virtual accomplice in her father's murder.

Nora al Tamimi, daughter of slain Iraqi opposition activist Taleb al Suhail al Tamimi, said from Beirut in a newspaper interview published Saturday that her father had planned a coup d'etat to overthrow Saddam in 1993, operating from Beirut and Amman.

"Zero hour was set for a certain June day in 1993 to stage the coup when Saddam would have been sponsoring an official event in Baghdad," Nora told the London-based Asharq Al Awsat newspaper in an interview conducted at the family house in Beirut.

"But the Americans, who did not want the coup to succeed possibly because they were certain my father would not go along with their polices, tipped off Saddam about the impending putsch by my father and gave the names of his top aides," Nora said. "All of them died in Saddam's torture chambers."

3. It may have happened under his watch....
But I'd like to hear more details or corroboration before I go off on the Big Dog.

6. Anything bad that happens in the first 3 years
can be blamed on the previous administration, according to Shrub. They reserve the right to increase that window as events dictate. :)

5. Has this source albawaba been debunked on DU before?
I cannot recall the article, but there was some discussion as to their being not trustworthy as a news source.

If the Big Dog was complicit, then he has to answer the charges, if they prove true. Naturally, that would lead right back to Reagan and Bush I, because such a policy does not occur in a vacuum. And of course bush** would have been aware through his advisors, right?

Tangled web.

9. LOL Just wait a week or two, Fox will pick it up

It is a fairly recent story, from a paper in Lebanon, so there is not a "western" link for it yet, and the lag time usually runs 1-3 weeks :)

8. As Chairman of the JCS under both Poppy & Big Dog...

...and having loyalties which obviously lean towards those in the first Bush admin (w/ some of the same Bush II players, like Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Armitage, et. al.), he could've purposefully set up the coup to fail, probably to rob Clinton of any credit in the overthrow. It's no secret that Poppy was deeply hurt and offended by his loss to Big Dog in '92, and given the well-known pettiness of the Bush family, it's entirely possible Powell was given orders by Poppy to set this up to fail.

The Bush family is the meanest and most spiteful family ever...

I'm through with you!
