Did Rumsfeld lie? "the secretary said what he said & I would go with that"

Rumsfeld in 1984 sought thaw with Iraq: report

<snip>Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) at the time was waging war on neighboring Iran and was using chemical weapons against enemy troops and also against the independence-seeking Kurdish population in northern Iraq.

The United States at the time supported Saddam, fearing an expansion of Iran's Islamic regime into Iraq and other Middle East countries.

When Rumsfeld was asked about his December 1983 trip to Baghdad after it came to light last year, he told reporters he had cautioned Saddam against using chemical weapons, an account The Washington Post said was at odds with the declassified State Department notes of his meeting.

Queried on this discrepancy, Pentagon (news - web sites) spokesman Larry Di Rita was quoted by the daily as saying: "the secretary said what he said, and I would go with that."

Personally I think he should pick up a gun and stand post there a while himself.

3. Well, there are known knowns and known unknowns
not to mention the unknown unknowns. since we don't know what Rummy knows, the known (that he gave WMD's to Saddam) and the unknown (what he remembers about it) probably have no relation to what he said.
