Ok, I made it all up. Probably not. But ....
Saddam's capture crowded more than just Dean off the headlines. Ah-nold, too. And that just when he had claimed his first major political success -- with the unanimous support of legislative Democrats, and against major Republican opposition.
Well, as he pointed out -- um, not in exactly these words -- he's been sleeping with the enemy for some time. Ah-nold is the world's only Kennedy Republican.
IF he were to see the light, I should think his announcement might run something like this -- "Emotionally, I am tied to the Republican party. It has been my political home for years. But a time comes when reason has to take the place of emotion. The Republican party today is not the party I joined, not in California and not in some other states, such as Texas. To govern effectively, we have to be pragmatic. The Republican Party of California, today, is too dominated by an ideological agenda to be pragmatic. (examples: opposition to Ah-nold initiatives, opposition to recovery of energy scam profits, etc.) Reason and pragmatism lead me to join the Democratic Party, understanding that, in California, this is the only basis for a broad-based government to solve problems and make people better off."
(Permission to use freely granted!)
Of course, since the VEEP is the constitutional successor to the president, there could be no Dean-Schwarzenegger or Clark- or Kerry-Schwarzenegger ticket, but -- Ah-nold for Secretary of Commerce? And he could make an impact campaigning as a redeemed sinner for any Democratic candidate -- much more splash than he is ever going to make in the *Bushpublican Party.
What would DUers think of the guy if he switched? Hypcritical opportunist or thoughtful pragmatist or redeemed sinner?
