Dean wins new Boston Herald N.Hampshire poll; Kerry wins headline
http://www2.bostonherald.com/news/local_regional/poll07272003.htm

In the Herald poll of likely New Hampshire primary voters, Dean takes 28 percent of the vote and Kerry 25 percent while a second tier of candidates lagged behind, U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut at 11 percent and U.S. Rep. Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.) at 9 percent.

<snip>

The Herald glosses over the final results of the poll by focusing on a subset of questions on the topic of whether Kerry or Dean is more "electable", vis-a-vis Bush*.

Fasten your seatbelts, kids. New Hampshire's going to be a wild ride!

1. Boston Herald = NY Post
They're setting up the Dean/Kerry conflict just to mock it tomorrow when their follow up will show Hillary overshadows ALL candidates. This has ONE purpose, to diminish ALL the Dem candidates to the voters, so they tune them out.

2. Kerry was ahead by two points a month ago; they're neck and neck
It will get interesting, no doubt. Either way, they're both within the MOE, so it's hard to tell who's really ahead. Let's hope it doesn't get nasty yet. Either one would make a great candidate, so it's hard to choose who to root for.

5. Kerry won three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a Silver Star
... on his SECOND tour of duty in Vietnam. John Kerry was the skipper of a fast river patrol boat, looks like a modern version of the PT-boats JFK made famous in WW2. Kerry volunteered for the most dangerous missions, taking his boat up the Mekong River to pick-up or drop-off commando teams. He did not lose a man under his command.

On one mission, his boat came under intense fire while evacuating some soldiers (I believe). An enemy combatant rose up from behind some bush on the riverbank and aimed a rocket-propelled grenade launcher at Kerry's boat from close-in range.

The RPG misfired and the guy ran into the bush with the weapon. From his position on the boat, Kerry saw what was happening and jumped in after the guy. He caught the man and shot him. Later, Kerry said he was determined to catch the man because his college friend, John J. Pershing IV, had been killed by an RPG in Vietnam a few weeks earlier.

When Kerry returned home after being wounded for the third time in four months, he asked for an early discharge in order to campaign against the war. His commanding officer agreed, and Kerry received an Honorable Discharge as a Lieutenant Commander.

As a civilian, Kerry helped organize the Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He helped stage anti-war protests and special events, including a much-publicized activity where he threw combat medals over the White House fence in protest against the war. He also testified before the US Senate, stating the US should stop its involvement ASAFP. Kerry asked the Senate: “How can you ask a man to die for a mistake?”

11. Kerry has become my third choice
After first Edwards and second Graham, however Graham needs to start raising some loot if he wants to stay in it.

Kerry was my second but he seems to be addicted to fence-sitting and talking out of both sides of his mouth

It seems to working for a lot of people, as I've seen alot support him because they thought he was/is against the war.

His nam service is a huge plus, but he's got nothing else big and a lot of negatives. Thurston Howell with medals.

He is the only electable New Englander running though

13. one correction
Kerry didn't throw his combat medals over the White House fence.

He threw his ribbons and the medal of a friend of his.

He has kept his medals from Vietnam.

7. the last paragraph
really annoys me.

"There is also an emerging gender gap between the two men - with more men supporting Dean and women siding with Kerry. Myers attributed that to voters' view that Dean is more independent-minded, a characteristic male voters are often drawn to."

What a bunch of sexist baloney.

18. You are 100% correct. However, it shows that Dean would be
the stronger candidate since women are much better in general at seeing through Bush's war mongering, borrow & spend bullploppy.

9. interesting results
The ARG poll of NH just released last week gave Kerry a six-point edge, now this poll has Dean up by three--I think NH is pretty much a dead heat and my feeling is whoever comes in second (to Gep) or actually beats Gep in Iowa will win NH.

It is interesting that some voters think Kerry is more electable. I think they are falling into the media spin on that. Yet they think he (Kerry) is more electable but more of them prefer Dean as the nominee according to this poll.

The good news for the doctor is that he is doing well with Independents (which seems to undercut the idea that he can't appeal to independents). He is doing well among men a group we need to win more votes from (I think in a race with Bush women will pick Dean). He is also doing well on healthcare and education two dominient Democratic issues. He needs to talk more about his record in Vermont and balancing the budget to shore up his numbers on who would do a better job on the economy.

10. simply
unbelievable how they put the spin on that piece...

the real news here, buried deep in the meat of the piece, is that dean pulls AHEAD of kerry...

looks like they were afraid to make a big deal out of dean leading... my question, what's your fear?

12. Murdoch would prefur Dean over Kerry
and either of them over Edwards or Graham. Don't worry about the Herald NOT pimping for either of them, especially Dean

19. This is good news for Dean, isnt it?
A number two showing in Iowa and a win in NH reallys sets Dean up as the frontrunner going into super tuesday.

I think its going to be a Dean/Gephardt contest in Michigan, though.
