21. Depends

What was he talking about when he said, "that felt good, let's do it again?"

1. Obviously his comments were edited. While this could have been something as simple as editing out obscenities, ...

2. The CNN ticker would have flowed uninterrupted while they were airing previously edited comments. In this it did not which probably explains why:

2a. There is no link to the source, and
2b. no date is given. I would surely love to see CNN's version of this instead of the cut and paste version these people assembled.

Looking at the CNN ticker, it jumps near the end. Is there a reason behind this editing?

24. And check out the CNN ticker.

Either CNN added the ticker before editing the video for airing then ended up cutting up their ticker ... or someone cut and pasted the original video as it aired on CNN.

And you know perfectly well the first option did not happen.

14. It is a CNN video. It will run on international but not domestic

CNN and Al Jaz have a limited resource-sharing agreement.

You may not be aware that Al-Jaz is now somewhat "discredited" in the rest of the world for having bowed to US pressure on a number of issues, after having had some personnel murdered, others disappeared, and their offices bombed twice.

Today the ones who call Al-Jaz stuff "propaganda" are the "other side."

59. Ever notice DU pages are linked are Rush and Free Republic?
I don't quite understand your point. Did the fact that it is linked to Al Jazeera (since apparently this is a video Arabs would be most interested, and rightfully so, in seeing) excuse the gusto? Excuse the "hell yes"?

What you're probably seeing here is bored soldiers not getting enough shoot-em up action, tired, angry at being deprived of their material comforts, far away from the people they care about... Who's to know if that man wasn't just target practice? It's the joy they're taking in this that leaves me open to those possibilities.

I'm glad you think it's disturbing because it is indeed! What are we going to do with these kids when they come home? There is practically no counselling available for them (because there are NO funds for that). How do they transition back to 'normal' life and walk among us?

I do not begrudge them the killing as much as the joy they took in it- and on film at that! It's not like they were filmed surreptiously. That's the most disturbing part- that to them this is nothing to be ashamed of, nothing grave, just something to celebrate. That part was most definitely in context.

Nobody yelled for those soldiers or inserted a commentary... I don't see how you can dismiss it as propaganda- unless you're saying it's a fake.

10. my god
I'm sure it happens more a lot more often than the one time a camera happened to be in the right place at the right time to catch it.

Reminded me of the scene from the frontline show, where the US went in, shot up a neighborhood killing a number of civilians - then came over and asked if any of the people they'd killed were combatants (of course, they werent).

Leadership comes from the top. If the president makes that case that might makes right, and advances the concept that violence is not only an acceptable way to solve problems - but is a preferred method - then how can we help but get soldiers who act like this.

I think there's a deep rooted rot in this country these days, and sometimes I think our bitching over the question of Howard or Wesley or Dennis really distracts us from it.

Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 05:07 PM by jokerman2004
That is ANY war.

War is savage, murderous, and utterly depersonalizing. That is why civilized nations believe war must be only only only the last resort. These young men are weapons.

And that is also why George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld et al are murderers and "genociders" (to coin a term a la Emperor Punchy).

22. Geneva Convention
The Geneva Convention protects the battle wounded. It's impossible to say though if this incident is a violation of the convention as we are given no background information. For example, the video makes it look as though the Marines were simply shooting at a wounded soldier, but for all we know, this is the culmination of a firefight where such action would be justified (not the cheering though. I don't like that).

34. Any number of things could be happening here
Maybe they approached him once and he fired at them. Maybe another wounded man was booby-trapped. Maybe this was a nasty fight that had lasted hours.

And maybe it's a war crime.

But the way it is presented is not helpful.

49. That's right
Even though I was shocked, even outraged when I originaly saw the video I forced myself to analyse it rationally. The unfortunate fact is this: the video as it's presented, is possibly misleading. It may be that our initial reaction is correct -- needless violence -- but we simply aren't given enough information to come to that conclusion. I therefore don't believe we can comment further; and that upsets me :-(

51. True
I mentioned the Geneva Convention with a heavy heart, knowing that it has thus far proved irrelevent to the actions of the incumbant administration. But none-the-less, I don't know how else to judge the actions of the military. The fact that the actions in Iraq have so far made a mockery of the GC doesn't negate it's wisdom and so long as we recognise its authority we have a weapon with which we can attack the manner in which this "war" is being fought.

The GC may or may not apply in this instance but I'm damn sure it has been breached in the recent past.

54. That may very well be true, but
it doesn't make this guy a prisoner. I can't tell if he's a wounded fighter caught in no man's land, or a civilian, but he sure doesn't look like a prisoner. Remember the police chief of Saigon killing the prisoner during Tet. That's what executing a prisoner looks like. The guy was tied up and held by the police when he was killed.

at least, that's what I was always taught . . . that Americans were compassionate, and would never open fire on an obviously disabled enemy, kill him, and then cheer about it . . . unfortunately, in today's America, it's likely that half of the people seeing this on CNN (were it ever to run in this country) would be cheering right along with those soldiers . . . it seems that every day something else happens that makes me ask "What are we doing? What have we become?" . . . and I fear the answer . . .

47. It had a CNN byline on the bottom
It shows a obviously wounded Iraqi laying on his side, He slowly raises his hand as if to show he is still alive, suddenly shots are fired and the ground around the wounded man goes up in puffs of dust as the bullets are pounding the dirt , a round hits the man and he slouches over dead. You can here whoops from soldiers as they realize he was hit and killed.
Then the tape goes to a man being interveiwed who expresses glee in the act, saying "Damn , lets do it again."

first of all we dont know where the kill shot came from. Second we dont know if that GI (if he is a GI) was talking about this incident. I find it hard to believe they would allow this to be captured on video. Now I do believe they probably have executed some folks. But that theyd let it be on video? Hmmmm...

Also the ticker...its clearly a US CNN ticker...with talk about Jimmy Kimmel and an "Inrun" rap CD. But its never been shown here. Why is that?

57. what sort of people sign up for combat duty
the adventurous patriots - the poor and uneducated looking for paid work and also unfortunately the gung ho sociopaths who like the idea of get to kill people and blow things up. If you then take those people and put them in a situation where the rules of engagement are regularly broken with the approval of the administration and chaos is rife it's hardly surprising that some of them turn into mini saddams themselves. It's not like this is a new phenomenon or even something that can be directly attributed to shrub (although he did put them there) teenage girls in Vietnamese villages and German women post 1945 can tell you all about it
