Something I really find funny about the whole San Francisco election.
Alright, I find it REALLY funny that San Francisco, one of America's most liberal cities, elects a DLC moderate Democrat who was supported by the GOP back in 2000. While Salt Lake City, located in probably the most conservative state in the Union, re-elected its socialist mayor in November.

Talk about up is down and down is up.......

1. Well, Go Figure.
And it does make an intriguing contrast.

Are you watching Angels in America, Sean? Kushner takes his story to Utah. I love the play.

as someone who was born at St. Mary's hospital in SF and has lived here all my life(36 years) let me say San Francisco is not as liberal as most people think its a collection of many small neighborhoods many of those are filled with moderates Liberals or what some here would call right wing loons

There are lots of areas in SF gays dare not show PDA they'll get bashed is a flash & you will never see an openly gay mayor in SF because Asian, Blacks & hispanic's will not vote for a gay

4. I think it's important to remember that the SF election
is a beacon of hope for what the American 2-party system could become.

Can you imagine if every election in America was between a green and a democrat?

Imagine how much improvement we could make to the country without moral imposition and corporate corruption take us further and further from progress.

Something to hope for anyway...

6. Newsroom outspent Matt Gonzalez 8 to 1
As predicted Gonzalez won the general election of the polls today, but Newsom won with the absentee ballets. .

5. Good Post Sean..
I just did a lengthy post in another thread about the election in SF. I'm not "green", but the green party incorporates many of the issues that effect my life and the lives of many many people living in poverty, disabled, sick, jobless or underemployed--->the disenfranchised et al.
I say we need more than two parties in American.

7. I lived in San Francisco for two years, worked there for 6

There is nothing especially progressive about that city except its label as one. The deep-seated corruption, social policies, overwhelming big business dominance of San Francisco's politics, rivals some of the most conservative in the nation IMHO. It does not deserve its liberal reputation. Excepting its somewhat more liberal attitude towards gays than other places, San Franciso has moved steadily to the right since the end of the 60's movement.

8. I was just so happy that the election
was between a Democrat and a Green. There's no way a Republican can win there. That's really funny to me.

9. Well he can if he slaps a D after his name
Seems that's all it takes these days. You can have Bechtel and George Schultz give you thousands of dollars... Sweatshop corporations are great too... You can duck out on a vote against the Patriot act in order not to offend your ritzy Republican donors... you can even float your idea of the USS homeless and fight against rent control... As long as you slap a D after your name, a Republican, endorsed and supported by other Republicans can win.

And some Dems are suicidal enough to cheer. How many Zell Millers will it take?

10. a possible explanation
I am just guessing, but it's possible that in Salt Lake City the Democratic Party did not campaign against its base.
