CARBONDALE LAWYER TO RUN FOR STATE HOUSE

CARBONDALE -- The Greens are back.

Carbondale Lawyer Richard Whitney announced Thursday that for the second time he is running for the 115th District seat in the Illinois Legislature as a Green Party candidate.

"The working people of the state of Illinois are underpaid and overtaxed," Whitney said. "Too much of the tax burden is falling on them and not enough on the wealthiest citizens of this state who have benefited the most from government and from the corporations who have received all kinds of special favors from government."

Whitney favors moving the state to a universal single-payer health care system, similar to the Canadian model. He said school funding should be removed from dependence on property taxes.

"I don't think this is going to be a symbolic campaign this time around. This is for real. I think that we actually have a very good prospect of winning this race in November," Whitney said....
