Drudge: Dean Consulting with Jimmy Carter
Edited on Sun Nov-30-03 05:43 PM by tritsofme
Dem hopeful Howard Dean has called former President Jimmy Carter to give updates, ask questions and seek advice, TIME magazine is planning to report on Monday.

The magazine asks Carter about the former Vermont governor's chances of winning the 2004 Presidential race: “He seems to be doing quite well. He came down to Georgia when he was just planning the campaign and talked to me and my wife about the basic tactics of ’76. On occasion, he has called me to give me a report on his campaign or to ask a question.”

Does Carter support Dean’s candidacy? “No, I’m going to support whoever I think will have the best chance next November.”

Was Dean offensive or just too honest in saying he wanted the support of southern whites with Confederate flags in their cars? “As I told him afterward, if you had just said you want the support of southern whites that drive pick-up trucks, the same message would have got across. But when he threw in the Confederate flag, it showed a little bit of an incompatibility with national opinion.”

1. I agree
I think he could have gotten the same message across without adding the "confederate flag" comment.

2. Not news.

When the whole confederate flag thing was going on, the stories on Dean deciding to apologize listed Carter as one of the people Dean called to consult.

Edit: well, the headline/overall story isn't. Some of the details are of course new.

3. Dean is raw. Sure it was stupid, but its better than a...
... scripted answer. I like to see a guy who isn't perfect. I don't trust people who are squeaky clean and are uber-politically correct.

4. .
Carter is a member of the tri-lateral commission and gave away the Panama canal to the Chinese. What advice is he seeking?

5. Please, give us more of your thoughts on President Carter....
and other Democrats as well like, say Bill Clinton and Al Gore. I'm curious as to exactly who in the party you like.

7. I just told my wife someone would find some fault in Carter...
..because he disagreed with Dean's flag comment. And there it is!

9. I don't think he was supporting Dean.
He was just bashing Carter. No one should do that even if he makes a comment you don't like about about a candidate. Carter deserves the luxury of speaking his mind.

And yes, I support Dean.

10. can your prove the last part of your post
the reason he gave, idiotic though it may be, was being on the Trilateral Commission and giving the canal to the Chinese. Do you have evidence that poster is lying?

12. I Thought He Gave The Panama Canal To The Panamanians
and many leaders belong to the Trilateral Commission and the CFR....

Also, I believe our lease on the Canal had ended....

I don't see how you can give back something you don't own...

Edited on Sun Nov-30-03 05:55 PM by wyldwolf
... now did I?

What part of my post do you want me to prove?

I said that because Carter disagreed with something Dean said, the poster was critical of Carter for one of his actions.

16. I Thought Only Right Wing Nuts Wanted To Maintain The Canal
I remember the brouhaha at the time.....

You had wingnuts like Jesse Helms crucifying Carter for giving back the Canal...

23. Oh, I get it...
Because you were so thoroughly embarassed in this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=797202&mesg_id=797979&page=

... and made such a wild accusation that you had to slink off when several people called you on it, you've been waiting on your chance to have me prove something.

The poster countered Carter's criticism of Dean by posting a completely off the wall comment - insinuating that Dean didn't need advice from one such as Carter.

Several of us took it that way.

Sorry, you lose again.

That has to have been one of the least useful comments I've ever heard here.

17. Dean Repeated The Rebel Flag Comment Several Times
I wonder if anyone suggested he not use that phrase at any point?

Did someone advise him not to and did Dean listen?

11. the horror: Dean has called former President Jimmy Carter - OMG!
how dare a fellow Democrat talk to another Democrat for political advice ... groundbreaking ... unheard of! unprecedented! is this the 7th sign?

I'm speechless. I'm shocked beyond belief.

now, if Drudge could pry Poppy Bush's pilfering and pillaging greasy involved hands and his ex-president club Carlyle Group away from the GOP and current White House ... now, that would be something ...

or admit his homosexuality ... even better Tabloid Journalism ...

19. I Think It's Great Dean Is Reaching Out To Carter
He's a good man and hopefully 50 years from now, his Presidency will be seen in better light.

And, while I'm at it, Reagan will be known for the Neo Con enabler he turned out to be.

15. Carter made his share of mistakes too
Remember the Playboy interview where he talked about his "lust" for beautiful women? Remember his flip flopping on abortion? And his questionable comments about desegregation?

22. Did Carter mean what I think he meant?
When asked if he supported Dean's candicancy, Carter answered, "No, I'm going to support whoever I think has the best chance next November." He makes it sound like he thinks someone other than Dean has the best chance.
