1. Watch the movie "Bob Roberts"
They're trying to co-opt popular entertainment to align themselves with "regular people."

2. David Bowie wasn't happy
that Rush used "Lets Dance" a few years back on his show. I guess they don't need to get permission from the artist, only the record label who owns the copyright! Sick!Didn't Hannity USE to play the Dixie Chicks all the time?

4. Unfortunately Rock is no longer the music of rebels and freethinkers
exclusively. There are a lot of right-wing rock music fans. Rock has largely lost its anti'authoritarian kick and is just fodder for commercials, right-wing radio shock jocks, selling beer, etc. This all happened around 1983 or so, by the way....

Man, we could sure use someone like Frank Zappa again (to paraphrase the "All in the Family" theme song).

11. I still like Rock music.. as long as it meets my strict criteria.
It has to be played by three or more musicians (guitar, bass, drums) minimum, although keys and other embellishments are allowed, who can play expressively. Read Joe Carducci's "Rock and the Pop Narcotic" for more info.

I place a lot of the blame for the decline of rock on Prince's bony shoulders; this puny jerk completey RUINED drum sounds for the entire 80's...replaced live mic'ing real wood-shelled drums with synth drums plugged into the recording console itself...Ugh, I hate that guy.

When rock is coopted by the right, it just sucks. I can't listen to music that's been used in commercials, etc.

16. my take too
I have encountered people who are particularly dumb seeming who enjoy right-wing radio who appear to think they are being wild and outrageous by going against the liberal media and daring to say hateful things... Being selfish is seen as being independent I guess... They... um... don't get it, I think.

9. that often bothers me
why do they use music by artist that would obviously disagree with most of their positions, it seems hypocritical to me, but i guess that is the bane of their existence.

12. Mr. Ego (Rush) Used Elvis Preseley's "In The Ghetto" the other day
I think it was prior to Mr. Ego's ramblings about Kobe Bryant's accuser. Rush is such a racist pig. How can the repukes expect to draw any of the black vote with friends like Rush speaking for them?? IDIOTS!

23. That Elvis song is one of the most racist I've ever heard.
Written by white people, to tell the story of how it is to be black and in a ghetto. ARGHHHH!!:puke:

13. Rock and Hip-Hop have outlived their progressive impetus
and are just brand names whose lyrics are Pepsi slogans. The aura of rebellion some of them exude is manufactured by Avon. It is no longer "London Calling" but is "Avon Calling."

Somehow I doubt that baroque harpsichord music would have the same effect.

Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 12:19 PM by wuushew
The Pretenders' song "My City is Gone"

Yep the The Pretenders' politics certainly agree with Rush. NOT!

Chrissie Hynde joins PETA protest against KFC

PARIS - Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders joined animal activists in a loud protest outside a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in central Paris.

Hynde and a dozen others, including leaders of the animal rights group PETA, were briefly detained by police after blocking traffic Wednesday on a main boulevard and smearing red paint across the restaurant's window to symbolize the blood of dead chickens.

"The protest won't end here," said the 51-year-old pop singer, who was scheduled to perform Friday in a pop music festival in western France. "Even if I shout for two hours I can assure you, I'll still have a voice for the concert."

17. Agreed. It's disgusting that he hijacked that song
I'm sure Chrissie hates what he's done.

BTW, I saw the Pretenders a couple of days before the war started and Chrissie yelled out to the crowd - "Let's hear it for America . . . . We're about to really fuck things up."

18. I remember a Chrissie Hynde a while ago regarding Rush's theme song.
Her response was somthing like Whatever, he's a freak, I don't get too worked up about it.

I am wildly paraphrasing, as it was so long ago, but I think I got the gist of it.

20. They want to indoctrinate "younger" people.
It's like hooking kids on cigarettes at a very early age. Then you got 'em for life. They want to connect with younger people to give themselves bigger audiences in the future.
