1. "I'm proud to be in that corner", too! But don't worry
it's gonna swing back our way. I could give a few more cliches right now. Like .."It's always darkest before dawn".

But I feel it's true and we are going to win in 2004 and if we don't I'll cross that freakin' bridge when I get to it. :kick:

2. I like you Pete, I really do, But...
Please don't break it down that way, because it's not quite accurate.

There are many Americans questioning what the hell is going on, and they don't fit into a box.

My father admitted to me recently that he is a registered Republican, however he says he absolutely hates this administration and will not vote Rep. next election (he is 72).

Don't pigeon-hole Americans...

5. I know how you feel, Pete...
Keep hope alive. Stealing another line from Shawshank Redemption - hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things.

We need to act. Maybe our feelings of helplessness come from the way we live our lives. Its easier to sit in front of the computer and voice our concerns than to actually do something -(not that I'm saying voicing concerns is not acting) -

How many of us have actually called our congressperson to lodge a formal complaint? Maybe you have, but the key to success is to get people to act.

Bush is going to be in Philadelphia tommorrow. How many of us can take off from work and protest this bastard?

11. Who are the ones taking potshots at the troops?
The folks here who are trying to get international support so some of them can go home and see their families, or those on the other side of the aisle who call them traitors for speaking out against the horrific conditions they are facing and the bald faced lies they are being told by the chimp in chief?

is that going to help fix the mess this country is in right now? Will the death of those two men help unemployment here? How about the homeless and unisured? What about the deficits? Yeah, I'm cheering really hard for the great strides made in IraQ. Sarcasm off

17. When has America ever been
anything other than lost? From its inception, it was a lost nation. Our greatest moments in history are the moments when we repent and attempt to make ammends for our previous sins (and we usually can't even get that right). Has there ever been a golden age whence we can get lost? It hasn't all just come unraveled in the last 2 1/2 years.

All of this being said, item #2 on your list worries me the most: "In another corner: a cowed and profoundly unprincipled press corps and punditry."

how do you like the way your boy Bush has lied to the nation? How do you like the way he went AWOL from the National Guard and pappy Bush saw to it that he got an honorable discharge?

18. Well put.
In fact, very well put.

We are being tested. It's not going to be pretty. I want to believe that people will wake up and see what is becoming of our country, but its as if they are all at a football game, cheering and chanting for the "kick ass" team. It's just a big game, as Jeff Christy has convinced everyone....nothing real, as long as you have your job and your SUV....and you can look down your nose at others less fortunate or people of other color or from other countries.

Its bizarro world in a very very very bad way, and those in charge and those who were once the purported watch dog of those in charge are all marching in lock-step off a cliff....and we are watching in horror as it happens, screaming into the abyss, only to hear them laughing and jeering at us for not joining in with the brown boot stomp.

It's like an Edgar Allen Poe poem come to life.

There certainly are Americans that are in the category 'hopeless'.

I do feel a momentum change however. Even the ostriches are beginnig to say WTF?

I've felt the pessimism but I have hope.

23. Reasons for Optimism
There's a cycle to history. The pigs happen to be up at the moment, but they can't stay there. I think there's something essentially un-American about repression, and it won't last. We don't live long enough to see these cycles, so it's difficult to stay optimistic. But every day, new young Americans arrive on the scene. They will reject the Bush "message" because it's odious. Karl Rove's tricks won't work when resistance takes hold. The neocon moment in American history will pass - these things do.

The 50's was a timid time, full of conformism and McCarthyism. (Sorta like now.) Then the beatniks went out of their way to challenge things. They were punished in numerous ways, including ridicule, but it didn't stop them from greatly influencing the 1960's. Significantly, Jack Kerouac, a leader of the beat generation, didn't like hippies. He thought they were self-indulgent and airheaded. They were.

30. We have nothing to lose
Why do you think the Finns made it so damn hard for the Soviets when they invaded in 1940? They fought with the strength of men who had nothing to lose and the world to gain. They fought like wolves backed inot a corner. They may have us backed into a corner, but as Sun Tzu says, "In death ground, fight." We may be surrounded and outnumbered, but there are cases in history where armies have been able to break out of those circumstances and snatch an impossible victory from the jaws of defeat. We cannot run, surrender is not an option, it is time to draw swords again and stand firm, and if we fall then our defeat will be sung of as the fall of heroes for all time and will inspire others to carry on the fight.

34. Thanks Pete
I was just telling someone this morning how difficult it is to believe where we've gone as a nation lately. I'm just dismayed.

If it were not for DU, Pacifica, Buzzflash, et al., I'd be in a full, nose-dive depression right now. Instead, I'm inspired to keep on fighting.

As the folk song says: We will never give up, we will never give in!
