5. President Clinton
As long as McAuliffe is the chair Bill is in charge. The next leader will be the person who gets their nominee the top job. If Dean wins the nomination there could be a good battle between the center and left for control.

7. Daschle
This is my order in general:

1) President
2) If no president from the party then Senate majority leader
3) If no president or senate majority leader then Speaker of the House
4) If no president, sentate majority leader or Speaker than Senate minority leader.

Therefore, Tom Daschle is the democratic party's leader.

8. Traditionally, the person who has most recently held the highest
office..

Clinton would be it, by default.. although there are always exceptions.. When Ford lost to Carter, I do not recall Ford being the "head of the republican party".. I guess for a while, they had no leader.. But of course we all know now, that Reagan was being groomed behind the scenes...

What's really odd, is that even though * is pResident, I do not even see HIM as the leader of their party..

Clinton would have to still be ours though, because I cannot think of another dem who can gaurantee a crowd wherever he goes, or whose every word and deed is reported on..
