Around the same time, another resident approached Superintendent Roy Reese about tribal masks, some of them resembling the devil, crafted by students and displayed at the district's offices.

Reese listened for three hours to John Giglio, who grilled him about the masks. Reese's explanation that the masks were not intended to have religious significance did little to placate Giglio.

"They have no tolerance for God in the school system, but to have devil masks is OK?" Giglio objected.
