Students to Bear Big Burden Under the Final Budget Bill

By ROBERT PEAR
and MICHAEL JANOFSKY

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 - Nearly one-third of all the savings in the final budget bill comes from student aid, the Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday.

Under the bill, college students would pay higher interest rates on loans. Many banks will receive lower subsidies. And the Education Department will work with the Internal Revenue Service to ferret out students and parents who underreport incomes on financial aid applications. The budget bill is estimated to save $39.7 billion over the next five years. Student aid accounts for $12.7 billion of the savings, or 32 percent.

...

The Bush administration worked closely with Republicans in Congress on provisions that affect student aid. But Education Secretary Margaret Spellings declined to comment until the bill cleared a final hurdle on Capitol Hill.

Republican negotiators said virtually all the cuts in student aid would be borne by banks and other lenders, an assertion sharply disputed by Democrats and college administrators, who said that two-thirds of the savings would be at the expense of students and their families....

3. And How Many Repugnicans Are STILL Deadbeats
How much ya wanna bet if we checked the records of most the Repugnicans who favor this crap that most of them had student loans or some type of financial aid and I'd be willing to bet that a good number went unpaid or deferred...allowing these shits to make a lot of money and now they're gonna make sure you don't get the same.

The Repugnicans hatred of education and educated people is to be expected. You can't feed bullshit and propaganda to a brain trained to think critically.

4. Cutting college loans and such is as low as they can get
They want you to work in their car washes and be their maids and janitors so they really dont care how an uneducated country is bad for everyone. As long as they have good domestics and people to clean up after them.

5. Student loans are a scam
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 03:09 AM by Babastard
They are a pyramid scheme between the lenders and the universitities. Up the amount of aid a student can get and the universities up their tuition.

And the law makes it darn near impossible to EVER discharge student loans in bankruptcy. EVER!

I would ALWAYS advise ANY student to NOT borrow ANY money from the federal student loan program...EVER!!!

Go to the Mafia first and see what their deal is.

I am buried in student loans I took out almost 20 years ago. It looks like I will die in debt with out much of anything to my name. Student loans are literally ruining my life!

I would rather deal with the mob.

Pretty dramatic for my first post yes, but this is a very sad and sore subject with me.

7. I hear you.
I've also got 20 year old loans on my back. I can't totally blame the government though. I have to blame myself for a period during which I allowed them to become a problem, and now I'm paying (literally) for my negligence.

I hope you can not let them ruin your life. It's only money. ;)

Welcome to DU, by the way.
