1. I do not live in NYC and support the strike
I posted another poll earlier about this, though not as detailed as this one. But as I said, I do not live in NYC and have no intention to so maybe I'm not the one to ask.

2. I support the strike and I USED to use NY public transit
If I still lived there, I'd probably still be supporting the strike and walking the (thankfully only) 20 blocks to my office, knowing that sometimes you have to be inconvenienced personally for the greater good.

No more union-busting!!!!

7. On the other hand, that rule could apply to the TWU as well.
Look, I'm not a New Yorker, so my opinion really doesn't matter, but it seems to me that the TWU, besides breaking the law, is basically shutting the city down (all those subway goers aren't rich fat-cats, BTW) because they can't compromise. I've got all the respect in the world for unions, but this is a public sector union, and they're not exactly bargaining for pennies. I'm trying not to sound harsh, but it seems to me that someone's got to look at it from the perspective of all those millions of people who get screwed.

Light your torches...

3. I live in NYC and I support the TWU
This strike is really, really inconvenient, but the Transit Workers have been getting a raw deal from the MTA for decades.

In my opinion, considering the miserable working conditions and what some of them call the "plantation mentality" of the TA bosses, plus the fact that they have accepted give-backs and on and on for twenty-five years, I think it's time we supported them.

They're the ones that drag our butts around 24/7/365.

Stand strong!

4. I know how far unions have to be pushed to call a strike
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 04:07 PM by Warpy
especially when it's an essential service and they know not only with they be asking members to go without pay, they'll be risking a great deal of public outrage from ungrateful SOBs whose only thought is their inconvenience, not whether or not management is bargaining in good faith.

The TWU is apparenly trying to force the city into binding arbitration, something a bad faith negotiator never wants because he's likely to lose.

I'm a nurse. I've worked in a union shop. I know what they're risking by this strike. I back them 100%.

5. Funny how the TWU folks get ignored and demeaned in negotiations
but boy, when they walk out they're suddenly the most important people in the world. What's it gonna be, Mr. Mayor/Governor? You can't have it both ways.

I'm for them 100%.

6. I'm not for this strike and neither is the National Workers Union.
The National Workers Union headquarters which oversees the 'Transport Workers Union Local 100' for NYC Transit (where the union dues end up at) informed the judge today that they told the local union NOT to go on strike and that it was not justified. This led to the fining of $1million per day against the local union.

11.  what is the *national workers union*?
i've been active in the labor movement for a long time, and i've never heard of them. and i'm pretty sure that the TWU international would be very surprised that their dues end up there. care to supply some documentation of that statement?

9. i hope the scabs that don't support the TWU also
don't take advantage of the benefits won with union sweat and blood and lives, and don't accept any sort of overtime pay or take weekends or holidays off or paid vacations or paid sick days or health insurance or pension or worker's comp, right?
