NYT reports study of Katrina dead - MOST DIED AFTER THE STORM
FINALLY, a study that attempts to ask how a group - about a quarter – of the deaths attributed to Hurricane Katrina REALLY happened. As we all suspected, most deaths happened AFTER the storm had passed, usually due to flooding or lack of supplies or care. And most of the deaths examined happened to people with lower incomes. In a striking omission, the article does not give racial demographics for their sample. Gee, I wonder why?

The Bush Administration has this blood on its hands. The numbers of hurricane dead are very likely grossly underestimated, just as TRUE NUMBERS OF IRAQI DEAD GREATLY EXCEED Administration estimates and are actively suppressed:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x5616912
thread title (12/16 GD): "Lancet study now censored because it shows a mass murder"

Truly, the volume of blood from Bush Administration murders is a flood of its own, and no mountain of lies can keep it contained.

I wish I could excerpt more than the 4 paragraphs allowed. I urge you to read the entire article.

Louisiana's Deadly Storm Took Strong as Well as the Helpless

By SHAILA DEWAN and JANET ROBERTS
Published: December 18, 2005

NEW ORLEANS - More than 100 of them drowned. Sixteen died trapped in attics. More than 40 died of heart failure or respiratory problems, including running out of oxygen. At least 65 died because help - shelter, water or a simple dose of insulin - came too late.

A study by The New York Times of more than 260 Louisianans who died during Hurricane Katrina or its aftermath found that almost all survived the height of the storm but died in the chaos and flooding that followed.

(snip)

New Orleans almost three-quarters of the black victims examined by The Times and almost half the white victims lived in neighborhoods where the average income was below $43,000, the city's overall average. In New Orleans, the median income for whites is almost twice what it is for blacks. Many, if not most, were Louisiana natives, and virtually all were members of the working class - nurses, janitors, barbers, merchant marines.

(snip)

They {Eddie Cherrie Jr. and his 91-year-old mother, Onelia, who used a walker and blood pressure medication} survived the storm but were later taken by helicopter to the airport, where officials separated a badly dehydrated Ms. Cherrie from her son, leaving her to die alone, he said. Mr. Cherrie said if the levees had not broken, she would have survived. "That's malfeasance," he said.

(snip)

Let’s not forget how FEMA blocked a doctor from treating dying patients at the airport – and there were deaths as a result.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1786336
thread title (Sept 16 LBN): Doctor says FEMA ordered him to stop treating hurricane victims

Perhaps Mrs. Cherrie was one of these – in any case, she was separated even from her son and she not only died in FEMA’s un-tender care, she died ALONE, and at least partially due to dehydration and stress, NOT the hurricane. The NYT article gives a number of other examples of such needless, cruel deaths caused by the Administration's criminal negligence and monstrous decisions. These deaths were NOT due to the hurricane, they were due to the Bush Administration’s criminal, murderous mishandling of the preparation for and response to the hurricane. So much for the "Culture of Life." What would Jesus say? How much more obvious could it be to anyone with eyes and a heart that the administration DOES NOT CARE?

And now we hear that the demolition of thousands of homes in New Orleans is set to begin:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/17/national/nationalspecial/17demolish.html?fta=y
NYT article title (12/17): Demolition of Thousands of Houses Is Set to Begin
Given the record of the administration, questions that should be unthinkable have to be asked: How many of these houses still contain bodies? And how many are being destroyed not because they are too damaged for safety as claimed, but because there are profits for landlords and profiteers buying up cheap land for development, or simply to keep the poor away?

1. Nominated. I still can't over the fact that I (sitting at home) knew about
the levee breaking before the President of the United States and possibly before the head of FEMA.

26. And that we were on DU trying to tell anyone who would listen
what was going on.

To watch Bush and Co deliberately ignoring an ongoing national emergency again, was beyond belief. The fact that he's still getting away with it, just makes it even worse.

I have been making pix around the clock for the last 72 hours because I go back to New Orleans tomorrow, and will be offline, perhaps for a very long time.

10. Be well, SR. Your art is surely making inroads on the Kool-Aid drinkers
and giving a powerful voice to us frustrated ones who already see through this evil and corrupt administration.

:yourock:  :patriot:

BTW, I spoke to a young doctor the other day here in the Boston area - he will be heading back to Louisiana too. He says Tulane is reopening at last in January.

11. Thanks... I hope trolls and lurkers will finally see that they are also on
the menu... and they thought Clinton was going to take away their freedoms. HA! It's the bastard THEY voted for who is turning America into a quasi Stalinist/fascist Police State. Can it get any weirder?

Tulane just fired 1/3 of their medical staff and will consolidating a lot. I have my doubts about their medical school in general.

Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 04:19 AM by Nothing Without Hope
Sounds like they are barely hanging on. And of course that's just that many more professional medical people and support staff that have to look for other jobs, if they haven't been doing it already.

15. Yes, and they closed Sophie Newcomb too.
They are consolidating many programs. They have already laid off 243 support workers and about 230 faculty members will be laid off (a professor told me that number is likely to rise to over 400).

16. I hope they can come back from this, but like the city itself, they
clearly have a long, long way to go. It's not surprising, given the trauma to the city and its people. Without proactive protection from flooding from future major hurricanes, the rebuilding won't happen.

Tissue, cell, virus stocks and patient records must have been damaged or lost as well. And besides the job losses, there are the students whose degree programs have been interrupted.

SR, I'll be thinking about you during your time in New Orleans. As I said, be well. Same for your family and other dear ones.

8. I agree. Also, * likes to try to blame the victims themselves. Nothing
is EVER his fault, of course, and whatever blame is left over from everybody else (all outside his administration) must be the fault of those stupid black folks, who surely deserved to drown. I do believe that's the way he thinks.

Swampy, even your inspired art can't begin to convey the depths of the eviil of this man, though you do get closer than anybody else.

4. "Someone's black hearted agenda".......
"that just about says it all. The Black Hearts in the bush administration are in full spin mode trying desperately to shift blame anywhere but where it actually belongs.

The Black Hearts; the bush cabal, their Corporate overlords, and the Corporate Media all whirling like Dervishes in order to get the boy king's approval numbers high enough so they can continue the rape and torture of our country and the world. There's not a sympathetic or empathetic bone in their collective bodies, the Black Hearts.

Money and power are their life-blood, the only thing that means anything to them and they see it slipping away. The Black Hearts, who will falsely trash anyone's credibility and character in order to cement their hold on power and the purse-strings of America. The Black Hearts, who profess to be The Righteous Stewards of our country's moral essence, while behind the scenes they do anything within their power to rob the poor and are guilty of just as many or more moral indiscretions as their counterparts.

The Black Hearts. We cannot wait any longer to remove these hideous demons from the halls of power in our country. America will never regain it's collective soul until the Black Hearts are removed. The Black Hearts must go, now."

authors would have wanted, as it has nothing to do with the main conclusions. I suspect editorial "restraint" here - don't want to upset the WH too much.

I've postd a brief headsup cross-post to this thread in the Hurricane Survivors Group here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=360x265

Significantly, one of the stories included in the few decribed in the article involves a situation in which the "official" cause of death is given as "drowning," but the family insists this is FALSE.
