3. Actually, if you look into it, Christ was given to some violence.
There is that matter of the money changers in the temple. I haven't read the bible for many decades, but if I recall correctly, Christ got violent on that occasion.

8. He turned over their tables
but I don't believe that he harmed anyone there.

Render unto Ceasear that which is Ceasar's, and render unto God, that which is God.

Best argument for separation of Church and state comes from Jesus himself.

And yet, the fundies want a Church/State. Why?

20. It looked pretty violent in this Rembrant:

It looks like violence, at least according to Rembrandt.

De Boulogne:

Passeri:

El Greco:

The Gospel According to Saint John:

"When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords and drove all from the Temple, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said: 'Get out of here.' (John 2:13-16)

It looks violent to me, but I'm not a Christian. I don't think it's harmless either, not buying much into Cheney reality. Maybe Christians define violence differently than I do.

32. It depends on how you view "probably." Most people make whips to whip.
The medieval painters certainly viewed the case in this way, the use of the whip for whipping. The paintings don't show a guy who looks like he's just making noise.

But I don't know. I wasn't there. Neither, I bet, were the authors of the gospels.

Of course, a guy doing this thing at the local church garage sale, where they might sell, for instance, doves, one would be arrested.

I have been in churches and cathedrals where candles are for sale. No one has made noise at me or at any of the religious people with a whip in these places, but I'll bet if they did, they would be in big trouble, and rightly so. I'll bet if someone overturned one of the tables in one of these places, one would also be in trouble.

7. Those who disagreed with Christ beat him.
But his advice was to turn the other cheek.

These "fundamentalists" don't represent Christianity.

Intelligent design is a fraud that should never even be discussed.

If one believes in an intelligent designer (as I do) that does not make it science, or on a scale with science.

Faith is just that, faith.

Scientific method can never be applied to faith.

These wackos are just sick fucks that should be prosecuted.

2. Mirecki hospitalized after beating
Douglas County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.

Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural Douglas County. In a series of interviews late this afternoon, Mirecki said the men who beat him were making references to the controversy that has propelled him into the headlines in recent weeks.

“I didn’t know them, but I’m sure they knew me,” he said.

Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck.

I once told my former neighbor who is a "devout" Christian (although not a Fundie) that I can never forgive the burning of the library at Alexandria. All that knowledge destroyed by small-minded, fearful Christians.

The story of Hypatia was discovered when I first went online years ago. I was apalled at the viciousness of those Christians toward this incredible woman.

Damn, now I'm mad all over again. :grr:

The broad brush "Christians" is BS.

The right wing Christians, aren't right, and don't act very Christian in the true sense of the word. And yes, a lot of very UnChristian things have been done in the name of Christ, but that does not make Christianity as a whole the problem.

It's very easy to claim the gods told you to do something. All gods are said to communicate in ways that aren't accessible to everyone, in dreams for instance. Christians who advocate violence are just as convinced they're acting in their god's name as any other believer.

He's the one who created everything in 6 days, you know. Or, so they think.

Some religious folks can imagine a God great enough to match the wonderful universe. Some of us just contemplate that universe. While others are stuck with a weak, angry, jealous deity--totally lacking in imagination.

Local Repubs made comments about how he clearly hated Christians (never mind that he's taught religious studies for many years). It's not surprising that the rednecks took notice... :(

If this was a professor at a Christian school beaten by atheists or Muslims or pagans, this would be a huge news bulletin. They would be interrupting every broadcast on tv.

Mirecki treated at hospital after beating

Associated Press

LAWRENCE, Kan. - A professor whose planned course on creationism and intelligent design was canceled after he sent e-mails deriding Christian conservatives was hospitalized Monday after an apparent roadside beating.

University of Kansas religious studies professor Paul Mirecki told the Lawrence Journal-World that two men who beat him were making references to the class that was to be offered for the first time this spring. Originally called "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies," the course was canceled last week at Mirecki's request.

The class was added after the Kansas Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in science standards for elementary and secondary students.

63. KS Repugs are truly insane.
This is the Republican party which has operated a phone line named "The Godarchy Line" out of their party offices. Their party news rag reads more like a Jack Chick tract than a political one. I've never been to a Repug meeting in KS but I was a Dem executive board member in Sedgwick County (Wichita). The Repugs in the most populated county in the state are totally insane theocrats. I expect that they would be that way in Lawrence, too.

This should be labelled a hate crime. Somebody should check to see if their are any Repug party connections.

80. The Repugs in Johnson County are pretty moderate
and I didn't think there were any repugs in Lawrence. LOL

Know what you mean about Wichita, though.

69. And one more twisted irony here...
as reported by Red State Rabble http://redstaterabble.blogspot.com/

BTW, uber conservative columnist John Altevogt, the man rumored to have leaked the e-mails that sparked the Mirecki controversy, is reported by Channel 6 to be skeptical that the event actually happened.

So rather than express concern, or remorse, he's implying that the beating never occurred. Things just keep getting creepier and creepier.

70. Good thing he wasn't a doctor who performed abortions....
Then, due to the overwhelming love in their hearts, and compassion for all life, they would have to kill him.

73. And people skoff at me when I tell them to buy guns
If there was ever a need to prove the rightwing will become violent when their pet neocons get thrown out of office, I think that need has been fulfilled with this event.

81. Freepers approve beatings for all evolutionists
To: Morris_Hattrick
Well, it looks like the mentality of the fundies is consistent . . .
Actually, what it looks like is that the position of all materialists and evolutionists is scientifically and morally bankrupt. Look, the guy lost a tooth. He was beaten severely. That proves beyond question evolutionists and materialists are plumb dumb and wrong. It also proves that you had best repent before the rest of us fundies don red baseball hats and wool gloves. Deal with it. Be sure to check the bushes outside before you go to sleep.
