Sources: Lieberman rejects White House overtures

(CNN) -- Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman has twice in recent days said "no" when approached about the possibility of a major job in the second Bush administration, CNN has learned.

The Cabinet vacancy at the Department of Homeland Security was the subject of the latest overture, according to congressional and other government sources. Those sources said the earlier overture was to see whether Lieberman might be interested in becoming the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

White House officials declined comment, saying they do not discuss personnel matters.

The only reason he would do it now is for sheer power. I don't think he is that bad. Who wants to jump onto a sinking ship?

2. He would only serve two years as Defense Secretary
and then what? No, I think he will stay in the Senate where he feels he can influence policy for years to come.

3. Rummy has be desperate to get out - since it is no fun when your
war fails. I mean was it not Cheney who was house hunting in Rummy's neighbourhood while Katrina hit? They seem to be living in the future.

That being said - I'm sure Rove is desperate to make inroads into the small percentage of Dem voters who will follow Lieberman.

That being said - Lieberman wants only security for Israel - and he can do that better as a Senator for the next 6 to 12 years.
