I thought there were two important points out of the whole hour. One is that there are divisions in the Pentagon about this type of thing (and others, witness Pace contradicting Rumsfeld about physical abuse at the press conf the other day) and it isn't only planting "good" stories that are true in the Iraqi media but also lies. As Amy said, you have these stories travel, being quotes and used authoritatively and they're bullshit.

Plus, again, as Matthews said that I agree with, Bush is spreading democracy, by his own words, but what type of democracy is it when it's based on lies and propaganda? And how can the Iraqis trust anything the United States says when they know they are targets, even though supposedly a "sovereign" country of propaganda efforts wihle the US trumpets a free press.

Buchanan seriously said "If we could buy off Al-Jazeera, shouldn't we?" Reagen should've come back & said "And if we can bomb them, we should do that too, right?" Buchanan's position that "war-time" allows the President to spread propaganda leads straight to allowing plans to eliminate unfavorable media outlets. It's just two sides of the same coin.

In that discussion Mr. Buchannan says such practices are "probably illegal" in the United States and I'm inclined to think he's correct.
