1. As much as I tend to agree...
NOTHING * says is unscripted by his puppeteers. We've all seen the good (comical) and the bad side of * when he decideds to speak on his "own."

8. Staying the course can be a VERY large blunder.
Too bad Bush don't, or can't, read the papers and the books!

3. I always considered it an elitist phrase....
It brought visions Biff and Muffy telling the "help" on their sailboat or yacht to keep going straight.

6. It's Right Up There With "Islamofascist"
I'm still trying to figure what the hell that is. Supposedly this is some great "worldwide conspiracy"...replacing the reds under your beds with guys actually wearing bed sheets. Maybe we should encourage Repugnicans to start double-speaking...that way we can get the truth every now and then out of them...

9. It goes back farther than Bush 41.
LBJ used the phrase frequently with regard to Vietnam. Here's one example.

WASHINGTON -- Bush officials bristle at the suggestion the war in Iraq might look anything like Vietnam. Yet, as today's war protests recall yesteryear, President Bush's own words echo those of President Johnson in 1967, a pivotal year for the United States in Vietnam.

"America is committed to the defense of South Vietnam until an honorable peace can be negotiated," Johnson told the Tennessee Legislature on March 15, 1967. Despite the obstacles to victory, the president said, "We shall stay the course."

That's about as far as my memory stretches, but according to this
http://www.word-detective.com/060704.html
it was used long before that.

"To stay the course" is often thought to be a nautical metaphor, and one can easily imagine a stalwart captain instructing a wavering helmsman to "Stay the course!" in the face of a stormy sea.

But the first use of the phrase in print, in 1885, comes from another sort of "course," the racetrack. "To stay the course" in this sense referred to the ability of a horse to endure the race and reach the finish line, preferably in a winning position. By 1916, however, the phrase had been adopted by politicians, and we've been urged to "stay the course" ever since.
