France warns against hasty U.S. pullout from Iraq

PARIS, Nov 29 (Reuters) - French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, one of the sharpest critics of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, warned Washington on Tuesday against pulling out troops without regard to regional security.

Villepin, interviewed in Paris by CNN, said a badly planned withdrawal could cause chaos in Iraq, "which of course would be disastrous for the whole region."

U.S. officials said last week the Pentagon planned to reduce its troop presence in Iraq from 155,000 to 138,000 after Dec. 15 parliamentary elections there, and could cut numbers back to 100,000 by next summer if conditions allowed.

Asked whether Washington should set a timetable for bringing home troops, Villepin said any withdrawal "should be coordinated with the local situation in Iraq and the regional situation."

1. I think this is a great strategy.
Keep hammering away at what they don't want. To make it appear that they're going to do it.

We all know Bush and Cheney don't want to bring the troops home. They're trying desperately to figure out a way to bring them home for the sake of the U.S. public, but to keep them there for the sake of their 14 bases.

De Villepin knows Bush's ratings are swirling in the toilet. This is reverse psychology at its best.

"Don't bring the troops home, not yet". "Please Brer Fox, don't throw me in that Briar Patch".

2. France or Europe are aware of the created mess
and nobody is interested to see the US surrendering under a hail of bullets...

The only solution to this mess is political and goes through dealing with Iran and Syria to contain the situation and avoiding a disintegration of Iraq. Then an honorable retreat could be settled.

This would "solve" the Al quaeda problem in Iraq by cutting off the tolerance to their actions.

France could play a role through its ties to Syria.

But Bush won't listen anyway, so it will end in a catastrophy
