Why Geography Matters: Three Challenges Facing America, CSPAN2
http://www.booktv.org/General/index.asp?segID=6092&schedID=387

On Friday, November 25 at 1:00 pm

Description: Michigan State University professor Harm de Blij argues that geographic illiteracy is a direct risk to America's national security in his book "Why Geography Matters." The author explains that in the event of an abrupt climate change, China will arise as a superpower and it will be easier for terrorist groups to threaten American interests. Mr. de Blij asserts that the only way for America to protect itself from these challenges is to understand the world's geography. This event was hosted by the World Affairs Council in Washington, DC.

1. kick
Just in case anyone is home to watch it. It's an interesting talk about how events, or countries like America, are mostly a product of being in the right place, at the right time.

3. geographers are part of "the reality-based community" ...
But Bush's backers are convinced that they are independent of both history and geography ... like other supremely-overconfident empire-builders.

4. Geography is key to so much.
Helps to know geography to better understand history, economics and so much more. As I understand, Mr Blij is the author of one of the most widely used college intro geography texts. Soon as I get some spare $$ I might trot over to the CC bookstore and pick one up. Or better yet, if I can next spring, just take the course. Wanted to major in geography in college but, well.. that's a long story.
'pede, frustrated geographer.

6. Ambrose Bierce once observed that, "God invented War. . .
to teach Americans geography."

Unfortunately, more truth to that quip than some are willing to admit.

I wish I'd seen your post earlier. I would have been interested in the program. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it will be repeated anytime soon.
