Latest line from Marine recruiter
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 09:53 AM by DawgHouse
So the other day, the same Cpl recruiting for the Marine Corps called my house again. Persistent little bugger! My son has told him at least three times that he is not interested in enlisting. In fact, the last time they talked, DS gave him a resounding "hell no" and explained again that he has NO interest in enlisting in the Marines. He told him to stop calling, he's wasting his time, etc.

I think my son is being too polite to this guy. When the recruiter called the other day, I answered the phone. He asked for my son, and I hesitated for a moment because, come on... how many more times is this guy going to call and badger my son?

But this time, the recruiter made me feel much better about the whole thing. He reassured me by saying "Oh, this isn't the Marine Corps. This is the Marine Reserves. It's totally different."

It says so right in their recruiting literature.

5. Tell Them Your Son Is Gay
see if they will stop calling then.

If that doesn't work, tell them the voices inside your son's head keep telling him NOT to join the military and you just can't persuade him any differently.

7. I have two sons and these guys called our house for years
I used to try to argue with them. I told one we were Quakers and in the event of a draft, our son would be seeking CO status. I finally just stopped answering the phone when I saw it was them.

Then a few years ago, son #1 had a new girlfriend and we were invited over to her parents' house for dinner. As the gf introduced us, her father said to me "You might not remember, but we have talked on the phone a few times". Turns out, he was a Marine recruiter and had called my house many times. LOL

8. Oh, no! LOL!
I don't understand why you guys don't take out restraining orders? Isn't that stalking? Surely there's one liberal, sane judge in your town that would sign off?

11. That's what caller ID is for
Now if they were knocking on my door or bugging my kids at school, then I would think about a restraining order. That never happened, they just called on the phone. And it's not much trouble to look at the caller ID and decide not to answer the phone.

As for that girlfriend whose dad was a recruiter - that relationship was doomed from the start. LOL She turned out to be a major nut case.

17. Don't get me started on this gf and her family
Mom is a fundie. She drives 50 miles roundtrip to go to church 3 nights a week. And she was unemployed and complained of having no money. (Yes, I was polite and kept my mouth shut)

Dad is an insane RW asshole. I saw this right off but my son was smitten with the daughter and impressed that her dad even spoke to him.

The daughter was really nuts and fortunately, my son figured her out soon enough. She is bulimic and bi-polar. She seemed okay for a year or so and then she decided to go off her meds. BO-ING - talk about a changed person!

The breakup was nasty. gf didn't take it well. She called 24/7. I finally blocked her number.

Anyway, I picture this family every time I think about craziness in the RW. LOL

22. Good for him
This crazy girl tried to pull the 'I'm pregnant' card to avert the breakup. And lemme tell ya, as much as I am looking forward to being a grandparent, the thought of sharing a grandchild with those nuts was pretty darn frightening.

10. I had a student who enlisted in the Marines in 2002
First of all he wanted to prove something to himself by making it through boot camp. He did. Then he went on to his "guaranteed" MOS of aircraft mechanic, which he became....

Then he was sent to Iraq with an Air-Wing unit, but owing to the shortage of manpower (i.e. infantry) he was assigned to a line unit as a rifleman during the fight in Fallujah. He will not talk about his experience(s) and I cannot blame him.

One thing Marine recruiters will not, or very reluctantly, tell prospective recruits is that every Marine is first and foremost a rifleman, their assigned MOS is secondary. If they are needed in the field with a rifle, then they must go.

BTW, I served as a Marine from 1976-81.

Everytime a recruiter of any branch is present at my school I "run interference" and try to keep them busy talking to me in lieu of the students; and I am rather adept at this. As the motto of Veterans for Peace states: WAGE PEACE.

VFP has a video available via their website (www.veteransforpeace.org) entitled: Know Before You Enlist: The Real Deal on Joining the Military.

14. If the phone bill is in your name, tell him to stop calling YOU and to
call your sons phone line...the number is 555-555-5555. End of story. Your son lives under your roof, tell the recruiter he's grounded from all phone privileged and his phone privileges will be restored when he moves out of your home and into his own apartment. You're not obligated by any laws to let your son talk to this buffoon.

Yep, totally different.

We don't send totally prepared Marines into combat, we send half prepared reservists into combat.
