Today I learned about ACLU
They showed a film in my PolySci class today.

Notable notes:

1) Molly Ivins was a major part of this film (Go Molly!)
2) It's incredible that Roger Baldwin supported ACLU up until his death in 1982(?)
3) Oliver North, surprisingly, supports ACLU, despite his conservative leanings. ACLU defended him in the Iran Contra scandals. Knowing him, I ignored what he said.

I think I'll join ACLU once I scrape up a little money for contribution towards the dues.

2. They do good stuff!

The thing I like most about them is that they defend people and groups that I (and I would guess most ACLU members) totally despise and oppose with the same spirit and dedication that they defend groups and people that I applaud!

3. You are correct.
I still wish I could convince them that money is not speech, however.

They are dead-set against CFR and any restrictions on campaign financing. IMO, they are dead-wrong on the issue.

I still support them though.

4. I have not studied their rationale, but I dont think it 'd be enforeceable

No one is more disdainful of Politics, Inc than I am, but I think that doing anything about it would require more fundamental, radical and sweeping changes than any CFR bill could deliver.

If I tell you that you can only give your candidate $100, and you, for whatever reason, want to give him $500, you will find a way to do it, even if you enlist 5 friends and give them each $100 to send in in their own names.

5. They are also taking the WH and Secret Service to court
over the shuttling of anti_Bush protestors to fenced in "free speech zones" (See the thread below about this)I love the ACLU!!!

I do agree that I respect ACLU more because they do support groups that I don't like.

6. i have been trying my best to join aclu, to no avail
i keep getting these solicitations from them to ms. xxxx xxxxxx.

i have repeatedly sent it back to them saying JUST CHANGE ME TO THE CORRECT GENDER, and i'll join.

i even wrote that i have a penis, and i never do drag, so there is no justifiable way that i could be addressed as ms.

that didn't do it. i keep getting the same solicitations.

now it has become a matter of principle. if they can't get that correct, after repeated notifications, then i can't be a member.

i can't be a card carrying member of the aclu if i have to pull out my card and it has ms. xxxx xxxxxx.

(no offense to any du women.)

i am in such a quandry.
