The Point Is The Stupid Republicans Let The Democrats Off The Hook.
By making it a different resolution, the republicans let the democrats off the hook.

They are getting weak. They were afraid to offer Murtha's resolution because they were afraid it might get too much support.

Too bad for them, because the lily-livered democrats (bless them, they all we got) would not have voted en masse in favor of Murtha's resolution. The republicans should have went for it, but they blinked.

Not only did they blink, but they resorted to cowardice and trickery as well. I don't think I've ever seen them look so bad as a party. They are just downright dishonorable.

They made themselves look ridiculous. They just tossed themselves out of power.

3. You're misunderestimating the GOP
This is rope-a-dope, the strategy Ali used in the ring where'd he'd cover up after throwing a few punches and let his opponent exhaust himself throwing punches at Ali's arms. Ali would land a few sharp punches each round and either KO the opponent after the opponent had flail away to exhaustion or would win on points.

Bush will declare victory after the next Iraq election and withdraw the troops. Mission accomplished, no thanks to those cowardly turncoat Democrats. Vote for republicans in November while the Democrats misunderestimate us again. Bigger GOP majorities in both houses. Jeb wins in 08.

I don't know how we beat this guy Bush. Reality and logic will never work.

30. Dems have been waiting for their turn. It won't come without fight
Dems thought they'd kick Bush's butt 2000, but they misunderestimated his willingness to steal an election with his brother's help in Florida. They thought they'd kick his butt in the 2002 mid terms because history said so (and they misunderestimated Bush). They were wrong. They tought they'd beat Bush in 2004 because he looked like a dumbass on TV during the debates and the early exit polls looked good for Kerry (and they misunderestimated Bush). They were wrong. It's way too early to start gloating about 2006. That's just a sign of more misunderestimation.

31. In none of those elections did "Dems" think they'd "kick Bush's butt"
That's just a fucking lie.

In 2000 everyone knew it was close. But the Dems won anyway, and the Bush flunkies stole the election, as most people now recognize.

In 2002, Bush was still riding high on his greatest failure - allowing the 9/11 attacks to happen. The despicable machinations that were associated with politicizing the run-up to the Iraq war are just now coming to light. But nobody I knew was very confident that Dems would make gains in 2002. The trend was against the Dems.

As for 2004, Bush benefitted greatly from incumbency. It was a hard row to hoe, and Kerry couldn't quite overcome the massive machine arrayed against him. If you know anybody who thought the election was locked up at any time in favor of the Dems, then you know an imbecile. Nobody believed it was a lock. Nobody.

So, lie, lie, and lie. Do you pracxtice at such falsehoods, or does it just come naturally?

16. Sorry. The Pukes will lose Congress next year. The mindset is done.
Once you lose trust and credibility, you never get it back.

The Rope-a-Dope thing worked for Muhammed Ali, because he was a legitimate world champion. George is a "bush" leaguer and he's finished. Ali was playing a dope, and George IS a dope. There's a big difference.

A co-worker who voted Republican in 2004 told me in the lunchroom the other day (with Bush making a speech on TV) ..."I used to think he was a nice looking man, but he just looks like a dumbass to me now." Friends, he will never be a "nice-looking" man to her again. He'll always look like a dumbass. Once you see through the hype and lies, you can't go back.

28. The Bush Admin. won't give up Iraq's resources simply to save face.
Sorry, but that's not going to happen. There are only two conditions under which US troops will come home from Iraq:

1) The Bush Admin. manages to set up a new thug regime in Iraq that will play ball with US business.

2) The GOP loses control of the government.

6. the resolution
I think the dems played the game right on this one.

I'm not a specialist on the Geneva Conventions, but I have a feeling that the repub resolution would have been against the GC, since there are several rules on what an occupying force can and cannot do.

I have a feeling the details of Murtha's resolution met the GC criteria. But if the Dems had voted for the immediate withdrawal and nothing else, not only would the repubs have beefed up their dems-are-the-party-of-cowards campaign, they very well could have created a nice dems-are-the-party-of-cowards-to-the-point-of-criminal campaign, which the repubs would have run with all the way to '06.

True, the repubs have thrown the GC out the window, but we all know they'll use anything they want if it plays in their favor.

Also, I think they changed the wording because some of the repubs would have voted for Murtha's, as some of the Dems would have voted against it. The last thing the repubs want is for an issue to transcend partisan politics.

Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 12:44 PM by Mr_Spock
The Dems would not have supported Murtha's resolution in great numbers, but the repukes just HAD to overplay the hand.

Thanks Repukes for showing your true colors - black heart and all...

13. Why should they vote "YES"? It was a terrible resolution
Why vote yes on a bad resolution, when you have a good one in hand? That would be the stupid move that Republicans wanted in the first place. Dumb idea.

33. The good one would never be on the floor. The bad one - who'll take credit
for ending the war now? W and the GOP now, cuz Dems are afraid of being attacked. They should know by now: there's not a thing they can do to spare them from being attacked. NONE.

14. They may have also lost their seats in the next election...
It wasn't worth voting on a BAD resolution, just to make a point. What if it did pass, they would look like ass holes. They ultimately have to do what is right and not play along with stunts. It was the right thing to do - they have a responsibility not to play political games - even when the opposition is daring them to...
