CNN/Murtha will be the ONLY Dem Speaker in Fight on Floor
Ed Henry/CNN

Dem party does not want Nancy Pelosi on the floor. (?)

Repubs want their day.
Dennis Hastert re: repub call to vote on Iraq pullout resolution- If we pull out and leave we strand the effort to stabilize the Middle East.

Some democrats feel that Murtha is such good friends with military people that he knows what they really think about Iraq.

We want to honor the sacrifice of the men and women in Iraq

Press Conference before leaving town

AGAIN, I say GO MURTHA

1. The Dems want Murtha to be the face of this fight. That is smart.

10. and they wanna show what these scumbags are doing
Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 03:41 PM by Strawman
Ganging up on and demonizing a vet.

He's going to come across like Hulk Hogan surrounded by a bunch of heels.

Hard to make someone look like a coward when they face a gang of bullies alone.

Still, I think this issue deserves more serious treatment than the back and forth gamesmanship were seeing from the leadership of the two parties. I'd prefer to see every Dem on the House floor strongly in support of Murtha like Kerry did today in the Senate. I think they are letting the Republicans dictate strategy here with all their nonsense about Michael Moore and San Francisco. Pelosi should not be afraid to show her face and we shouldn't have to hide the anti-war liberals. These are the people who have been fucking right all along.

15. I have a stupid question
Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 03:46 PM by Strawman
The Republicans have to vote on this also don't they?

They can't have a symbolic resolution that forces only one party to vote can they?

Edit: never mind. I found the answer. Looks like the Repubs will vote (mostly) in unison to send a message that they support the war.

13. Agree! Murtha's issue is redeployment - NOT cut and run.
The Dems need to get out there and repeat what he actually said, not cower under the Repub memes.

Murtha's statements - bold emphasis mine

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/middle_east/july-dec05/withdrawal_11-17.html

"I hope this is a watershed. I hope a lot of people think about what I've said and we can begin to withdraw our troops immediately from that area and put them on the horizon, or over the horizon, so if they have to they can go back in."

"This is an idea of how we can save lives, of how we can be on the periphery of Iraq and send troops back in, in case there is an increase in terrorism that we need to go back in."

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,17287351%255E663,00.html

"to immediately redeploy US troops consistent with the safety of US forces".

"With a US troop redeployment, the Iraqi security forces will be incentified to take control,"

28. Right. He mentioned keeping a Marine strike force in Kuwait (if
possible) who could come in and destroy a terrorist camp if one pops up.

Hastert is such a scumbag! He has never served a day in his life! What a prick and what a coward!

Peace.

6. Seriously? He's to stand alone?
I can't believe it.

I know that Kucinich, Conyers, Woolsey, Lee, others would want to say something.

11. It's a credibility issue....
Nothing against Kucinich, Conyers, Woolsey, and Lee but they arent military veterans, they've been consistently against anything having anything to do with the military for years. Everyone KNOWS they oppose Iraq and everyone knows exactly what they'd say. Murtha on the otherhand has consistently supported the military in almost everything they've done for 30 years. He's got an inside track to the defense department and the military as a whole.

In other words, he has credentials that the other reps you're talking about do NOT have.

18. Of course a handful of Dems would support him (our favs)
From what I heard from the repuke press conference, it sounds like they are going to introduce a demeaning piece of garbage that mocks Murtha's plan/stance.

I'm hoping that Murtha will be the only one to speak so that he can tell all of the chicken hawks how despicable they are for treating the lives of the troops as if they are pawns in their game. Have all of the Dems give him a standing ovation, and they all leave together.

That's what I'm hoping the Dems are doing.

16. Hotline Update
CNN is reporting that Dems are planning on having just Murtha debate the resolution, but it remains to be seen how and if the rest of the caucus votes.

21. I hope I'm wrong,
but it sounds like more chickenshit Dems to me. The image of only one Dem speaking while hordes (or should I say whores) or Republicans are speaking won't look good.

26. Just Murtha
I think this is brilliant!!! He scared them to death yesterday because he is a military man, he knows military people in high positions. He speaks to them on a regular basis and he knows what they really think. He never would have given that speech yesterday if he thought he was not speaking for the military. That is the issue that stands him apart. He will do a great job. GO MURTHA!!!

29. Has the language of the Resolution been published ?
I would be willing to bet that Murtha will be voting against a Repug written resolution. It is not going to mirror his request for re-deployment. It will say something about cut and run, blah, blah, blah.
