NAACP chief makes switch to GOP (Fucking Scumbag!)
For decades, Republicans have struggled to reach out to black Americans. But now in Orange County, the GOP has to reach no further than the NAACP.

As of this week, Derrick Wallace, head of Orange County's NAACP, has switched parties -- to become a Republican.

"I've thought about this for two years," Wallace said Tuesday afternoon, just a few hours after returning from the elections office. "This is not a decision I made yesterday."

It is, however, a decision that rang out like a shot among political circles.

Republican Party leader Lew Oliver described himself as "extraordinarily pleased," while Democratic leader Tim Shea said he was disappointed.

Wallace, a construction-company exec, was candid about the fact that his business life was a big part of his decision to change.

"It's purely a business decision. Ninety percent of those I do business with are Republicans," he said. "Opportunities that have come to my firm have been brought by Republicans."

To that, Shea responded: "I'm a little confused. Are we talking about the National Association for the Advancement of Construction Professionals -- or Colored People?"

and that's about it. He's obviously not too concerned with anybody else's problems - his defense of his decision shows that, hell he's a perfect republican as far as I can see. I have a small idea - resign from the NAACP while you're at it. That would show at least a little honor.

on edit - I keep forgetting words.

Edited on Thu Nov-17-05 03:43 PM by DaveColorado
That sound you hear is Thurgood Marshall and Charles Hamilton Huston spinning in their graves.

Considering the "leader" of the Gop, W, just nominated a man to SCOTUS who does not believe in "one man one vote," this man is a traitor to civil rights to change parties at this moment.

This man is a traitor to all the NAACP has stood for throughout its history.

10. Reminds me of what my Dad always told me...
He was an immigrant's son. The only one of his siblings to go to college. He became successful, had five sons and a good life.
And he continually reminds us, "Never forget where you came from, and never forget those who are still there."

13. wholly opportunistic
I used to live in Orange county, and I can certainly understand why being a Republican business owner helps draw in GOP customers. That being said, doing so as a representative of a civil rights group on behalf of a party that gives not a damn about civil rights unless it's how to erode them is just wrong. I don't believe that any group is or should be monolithic, but with this administration it's like sleeping with the devil.

I think over-reacting to silly, hyped stories like this one is exactly what the GOPee wants.

So some political hack changes parties. Big whoop. Next!

15. This might be unpopular, but...
I think more blacks should join the GOP for their own good, if only to have more of a voice in politics and inspire the GOP to care more about their concerns. I think the Democratic Party tends to ignore them, and the GOP just dismisses them because they never get their support.

That said, this guy's reasons for joining the GOP just seem stupid.

18. This might be unpopular, but
your post is full of it.

Look at what the GOP did to J.C. Watts.

He tried to use his "voice", only to be shut up, pimp slapped, and kicked out of his "leadership" post when they were finished using him.

23. Really?
I don't really know what happened to end Watts' career. Please elucidate.

Otherwise, I think that the GOP needs some prominent blacks desperately, and I think that it's good. It helps the country a) to move beyond race and b) to better address blacks' concerns. It doesn't help anyone if they're effectively shut out of positions of influence because they vote as a block for a party that takes them for granted. Of course, who am I to tell anyone how to vote? I guess if blacks thought the GOP could offer them something, they'd have joined already.

But I still strongly dislike the race-based attacks on guys like Steele in MD, if only because there are other and better reasons to criticize a conservative. Relying on race is seedy and implies that blacks can only have one set of opinions in good faith, which I think is false as hell. If blacks can only have one set of opinions in good faith, then why can whites have a range of opinions without their honesty being questioned?

26. you know what I honestly think and feel about Black Republicans?
Edited on Thu Nov-17-05 03:59 PM by CatWoman
they are the "slave hunters". You know, the black traitors who were hired by cowardly whites for a pittance to go into the woods and steal other blacks and condemn them to a life of misery in slavery.

they are overseer's "boy". You know, the black traitors who whipped slaves into submission so that the cowardly overseer wouldn't get his hands dirty doing it.

they are fools. they are opportunists. they are idiots. they are scum.

all they care about is themselves. they aren't joining the GOP for the "good" of other blacks -- they join for their own good.

33. Well..
We clearly disagree, but tell me if you can see my point if I explain it better.

Not all politics is about race, and most people join political parties for non-racial reasons. So why isn't this as true for blacks as it is for whites? Doesn't that box blacks into a corner? In other words, what political party does a black person vote for if he supports low taxes, local control of education, gun rights, school choice, restrictions on abortion and other things that have nothing to do with race? He's a natural Republican. Even though some in his party are hostile to issues that he may care about (Aff. Ac., etc...), he would agree more with the GOP than with the Dems. Does that make him a slave-hunter? Am I wrong?

29. I tend to agree with you.
But I think your opinion will be unpopular. One might meet this gentleman and find out he's an intelligent, thoughtful person, whose decision makes sense in his situation. I'm not for disparaging remarks about someone just because they think differently than I. It may not make sense to us, but implying that he's somehow an idiot because of a choice he should be allowed to make on his own, is wrong. Maybe he will choose to resign. Or maybe he believes he can still serve in his position. The choice is his and the people in the organization he leads, to make.

My impression of the so-called 'race-based' attack on Steele in MD is that it is false. The rethugs have not been able to prove any of it. Do you have any substantiating evidence?

Your argument certainly made sense with the Republican Party of Richard ('affirmative action') Nixon, Jacob Javits, Nelson Rockefeller, Jerry Ford, Jack Kemp, Christine Todd Whitman and Tom Kean.

It makes as much sense as my subject line today.

36. I see your point
But I disagree. Back in the Nixon era, many more blacks did vote Republican. They got turned off when the white south started voting GOP and dashed to the Dems. It was a sensible move, but I think it's had some negative repercussions that I mentioned above.

Any African-American who could watch what the Republican Party did to thousands of black people after Katrina, and switch sides is no one who should be heading the NAACP -- even in Orange County.
