Husband is in Mississippi. Ground zero, he calls it.
Husband's company (very generous) has sent their employees to Mississippi to construct pre-fab shelters for the residents. This is after his company gave several millions of dollars to the Red Cross.

Husband was appalled. People are still living in tents and their cars two months after Katrina. Once the TeeVee cameras left, so did all the aid.

This is not America at its Best.

1. Who gave the aid and then took it back?
Without names, there is no logical point.

4. So the government sends MS sons and daughters to Iraq, and
when tragedy hits, hmmmm, too bad.

All the money that was collected from the public. Where is it if people are living in tents and cars two months later?

Husband's company is sending construction workers on a rotation basis and picking up the tab for the prefabs and workers. I wonder if this couldn't have been done by the MS National Guard if they weren't elsewhere.

5. Actually they would not be allowed to rebuild. Thee Seabees tried to
help but were stopped. Seems the military is not allowed to do any work that would take business away from private companies. The Navy was ordered to stop repairing houses. Heck, it took a major effort just to allow them to help clear Hwy 90.

7. So people live in tents and their cars? They are not building
homes. They are building temporary shelters.

8. Same thing I am afraid. I agree its wrong. My house was one of those
destroyed. The Seabees were actually working on a fellow Officers residence when private contractors complained they were taking away business and they were told to stop. They can no longer help. <shrug>

3. And the Red Cross? What did they do with the millions that were
donated for the Hurricane Katrina victims? IMO, we need to call for the Red Cross to have the allocations audited and reported. I always had a bad feeling about this. Shrub was on the tube the Saturday evening before Katrina hit TELLING Americans to donate to the Red Cross. Actually, at the time, it seemed to be the only thing he was focused on. Hmmmmm...wonder where all that money went?

Peace.

6. Husband is calling tonight. I am going to see what they need
in linens, pillows, mattresses and such and present it to Sharing and Caring.

It's two months later.

I'm definitely going to press for an accounting of the Red Cross.

9. It's disgusting!
This is not what we're about in this country. I'm glad at least NPR is still doing stories on the affected areas.

There is a church down the road getting a tractor trailer full of supplies. I'll drop some off this week.

13. Check this article in today's Sun-Herald- Still in tents
http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/13161897.htm

snip

BAY ST. LOUIS - Todd Derry and “Mr. Bill” Tudury sit sipping coffee just outside a tent on Tudury’s front lawn. He’s been living there for more than 10 weeks, waiting for a FEMA trailer he was told he’d get in five days.

"That was a month ago," Tudury says, managing to smile.

"You came to do a story about the Yard of the Month, right?" Derry asks. Tudury's smile broadens.

"Yeah, Bill's got no trailer, but he's got a lawn mower," Derry says, "so he's got the best looking yard on the street."

"Bill Tudury survived the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina by breathing through this piece of PVC pipe when he was trapped in his Felicity Street house in Bay St. Louis. After two months of living in a tent, he got a FEMA trailer on Friday."
