"Praetorian Guard" - vast CIA conspiracy GOP meme
Okay, here's what Frist and Lott are up to; they are pushing this new meme that the WSJ readers and Rush listners I know have been promoting, the idea that the CIA is like the imperial Roman "praetorian guard," who more than once led coups and deposed and installed emporers. They allege that the CIA is engaged in a vast conspiracy to take down Bush, and to this end, the CIA has orchestrated the entire Plame affair.

And this leak of the secret prisons will be used as a way to publicize and sensationalize this characterization of the CIA as a "praetorian guard" intent on deposing Bush.

The actual sourcing of the leak as phrased in the Washington Post was "several former and current intelligence officers and several other government officials."

Translate that to "a cabal of rogue CIA agents in conspiracy with a bunch of dmeocratic senators and that crazy McCain as well."

They are going to play it as a conspiracy to bring down the presidency.

13. Good Grief!
Don't they understand we are Democrats? We can't co-ordinate anything. If we were as well organized as this implies, we would never have let the Pinhead in the White House in the first place. Golly, I wish we were as united as they like to pretend we are.

9. The resistance on whose part?
The dems? Because the "other officials" were probably all dems. They get caught up in this spin of a treasonous leaking of classified information for the purpose of taking down the president. See that, the pot calls the kettle black.

I do believe this is Rove's work now, he has always believed in turning your opponent's main strength into a weapon against him, the big lie. McCain is beating Bush as a "reformer," next thing you know, Bush is a "reformer with results." Democrats beating you up because your staff leaked secrets to discredit somebody? "Hey, look at those democrats, they are leaking secrets to discredit me." Thats a perfect example of a Rove move.

5. This is working up to a "night of the long knives" for the CIA
Looks like the RW is bent on purging intelligence agencies of anyone that exhibits any intelligence

7. Yup; Bush is all about revenge. CIA bucked him, crossed him, they get hit
You are right, but he's more subtle than Nixon, Bush has a compliant Congress, so he's gonna hold HUAC-like public hearings to smear and destroy the CIA, rather than doing a purge that would be perceived as such. Doesn't mean it will work, its still stupid, its just more subtle.

This dramatic congressional action all of a sudden so reminds me of the Terry Schiavo stunts.

The thing is, I wonder if its Bush or Cheney. Its such a bone-headed move that I could only imagine its Cheney. Cheney has a special kind of brilliance, he can come up with brilliant, smart ways to do something incredibly stupid. Every single thing Cheney is behind comes out an unmitigated disaster. If this blows up in their faces, that will be the proof Cheney came up with it.

6. Well, so what,
isn't that what the CIA is supposed to do? Protect Americans from harm. And if the harm is from the White House, they are doing their job...I say, good for them...(although we all know this is just another blame shifting talking point)

10. Bwahahahahaha. The rightwing heroes are now their enemies.
Next thing, the Freepers will be burning all their Tom Clancy (comic) books and calling for an investigation into the overthrow of Allende and the murder of Lumumba.

Ahh..the irony.

18. There's no grand conspiracy, but
there are a LOT of very pissed-off spooks and ex-spooks out there who hate Chimpco for a very good reason: the intelligence pros were frozen out of the pre-war intelligence gathering or were forced to use sources they knew were not credible because Darth Cheney wanted justification for the war come hell or high water. Then Chimpco turns around and blames the CIA for all of the problems/lack of foresight etc., when the real villains of the piece were WHIG. This is the spooks' revenge.

As some DUer posted a couple of weeks ago, not even a president can fuck with the CIA and expect to get by with it.

19. So...
How did the CIA force Libby, Rove, and others into leaking Plame's name to reporters? I'd be interested in hearing their explanation for that. They are saying the CIA orchestrated leaking to Novak? How did the CIA orchestrate making Republicans leak? Do they realize how nutty they sound?
