Field Poll: Absentee clout on the rise-gop losing edge in California
<snip>

In a final flurry of campaigning Monday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told voters that today would be "Judgment Day."
But a Field Poll released Monday found that as many as four out of every 10 voters likely made their judgments before today's special election by casting their votes with absentee ballots.

That would set a record for absentee ballots in the state.
"In the not-too-distant future, a majority of votes in California will be cast by mail," said Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo. "If you have voted once absentee, it's a good predictor you will do it again."

Butte voter turnout already at 24 percent
BY E-R Staff

Conventional wisdom holds that special elections have poor turnout, but when the polls opened today in Butte County, 24 percent of the registered voters had already cast their ballots.
As of Monday, the Butte County Clerk/Recorder's Office had received 28,710 absentee ballots.

With just under 120,000 registered voters in the county, the ballots already received bring the turnout to 24 percent....

...According to Butte County records, the clerk/recorder sent out 51,065 absentee ballots....

...After the polls close tonight, election results will be posted on the Butte County Clerk's Web site: http://clerk-recorder.buttecounty.ne
