2. was she ever sworn in as First Lady? Does First Lady have defined duties?
The title "First Lady" is colloquial and has no official function, it is not legally or constitutionally defined. She can say anything she wants but it is not a post she could legally resign from since it is not a legally defined role.

5. I wouldn't say that.
They may not be elected, but some First Ladies have contributed much to their husbands' administrations.

Purely decorative--no, I don't agree. Maybe with THIS administration, but not always in the past.

4. It's not really an 'office' proper
Just an honorific, comes along with being married to the president. Don't think there's such a thing as being married to the Pres. without being called First Lady, so I don't know that she actually can "resign."

I don't think she'll divorce him. Their images and their paths in life are too much together and similar to separate. Plus, there's the religious right element. Probably their base would run riot if they got divorced in office.

7. If she ever told him she was leaving him
It would shame to Commander-in-chief, and therefore encourage the terrorists.
It would cause his base to be disillusioned with the sanctity of marriage.
This would also set a precedent that the Repub party would not want to set at ANY cost

She would instead probably take too many Xanax one night and create a widow president with soaring sympathetic national popularity.

I'd keep smiling, waving, and fighting gang tattoos if I were her.

11. First Lady isn't an elected position.
Laura could just go back to Texas, take her old bridesmaid gowns with her, & let Babs be Boy George's hostess. Bess Truman hated public life & didn't live at the White House during her husband's administration. But I doubt that would ever happen; it would make Boy George look like a mama's boy.
