The New York Times can't seem to redeem itself.
I got my paper this morning expecting all kinds of front-page coverage about Senator Reid's move yesterday. Right. It's on page A22.

There is, however, a front-page article by Kirkpatrick and Hulse about how the "G.O.P. Reaches To Other Party on Court Pick."

On A22, Reid's action is discussed in an article whose headline refers to it as a "Partisan Quarrel." The article is not by Kirkpatrick and Hulse this time -- it's by Hulse and Kirkpatrick! I guess they went to J-school with Bumiller.

I used to wish for a paper that tried to be objective, not leaning toward my side of the political spectrum. But after all the water the NYT has carried for the Republican party, I'm starting to feel that the only way we'll get some justice is for it to lean our way for a while. Not that I expect THAT to happen.

1. NYT Isn't Even Trying
Subscriptions are down 20% in my town (Ann Arbor) partly due to the economy, no doubt. But I think that impatience with the eccentric coverage of national events may be a contributing factor.

2. You should not be too surprised
The iconic liberal media institutions are always under attack by the right wing. They managed to destroy the Times with Judy's inside help, they offered Ted Turner a fortune and took CNN away from us. We simply have to understand that.

4. I'm not surprised, but I am annoyed.
Of course, they've been annoying me for some time now. I remember perfectly the day Miller wrote that bullshit about the Iraqi general poking in the sand for WMDs, which she was allowed to watch from a distance. That one made me laugh out loud. I was pissed when the reports stating that there were no WMDs turned up deep inside the paper instead of on the front page. I just can't believe they don't notice that their credibility is swirling in the toilet.

6. I don't read the Times anymore. They were used as a tool for
an illegal war and apparently it doesn't matter to them.

7. You've got that right.
Unfortunately, it's my "local" paper. I do enjoy Krugman and Herbert, as well as some of their special sections, but the political coverage is getting worse all the time.
