Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 09:16 AM by xultar
the hurricane. Shouldn't they have been able to take care of themselves for three days? Jeez! The hurricane was MONDAY. They were complaining on TUESDAY. They shouldn't expect the government to take care of them. WTF are they thinking?

Oh wait. More whites than blacks are affected in FL. Ahhh I get it.

The people in NOLA were complaining after 3 days and waited for 5 fuckin days. All of the republicans couldn't understand why the negroes couldn't take care of themselves for three miserable days. The welfare state is gone. No complaining NEGROES. Pick yourselves up by the boot straps.

Oh wait. You can't afford boots. Then socks then

1. If a katrina like hurricane hit Florida
and Katrina was much worse then Wilma the whining would be heard to the moon. I love you folks in Florida but you were supposed to receive the best service government could provide. FEMA was gonna work for you. NYT sees it differently:

Louisiana update: This morning Governor Blanco sent her Rebuild Louisiana Commission on the Road to assess damage and talk with citizens. I thought she was sitting on her thumbs being a do nothing Democrat.

2. An outstanding question, because
the storm dawdled for several days between Cuba and the Cancun area, giving ample time for preparation. There were no surprise turns - it came ashore right near the predicted site.

Another question is why didn't the tourists in Cancun who are now complaining depart when there was time and who now want the US gov to come and "rescue" them.

BTW - even though I live in N Fla, we were stocked up and ready, even had two extra cases of dog food for the furkids.

7. I know at least four Cancun tourists who were just stupid
My friend's parents didn't leave because an early ticket out would have cost $300/each above what they had already paid. They are very well-off, were staying at a 5-star hotel, but didn't want to cough up an extra $600.

Their friends, who were traveling with them, didn't leave because the wife was "having too much fun".

her father for the rest of their lives about his decision to "save" $600 (God know how much the...uh...extension of their vacation cost them)

20. I have a niece who is an agent for one of the
condo complexes in Cancun. She and her husband were visiting in Fla and extended their visit until the storm passed. Last I heard from her they were on the way back to see if there was anything left to be an agent for.

3. So. Is the the wealthy, aristocrats complaining, or the working class
who probably could not afford to just up and leave a few days before the storm hit. Remember, several people were fired in NO for not showing up to work.

5. I am in Florida and it amazes me that THE DAY AFTER the
hurricane, people were out waiting in line for supplies. For crying out loud, I have enough soup in my pantry to feed the family for a day or two, not to mention dry cereal, or crackers.

These people didn't have their homes filled to the attic with water, so there supplies should be intact. They didn't have ONE DAYS worth of water or food? That makes no sense. I keep several days worth of canned goods in a box that I assemble in the summer when stuff goes on sale. If I don't need it for a hurricane - I donate it during the holiday season's many canned food drives, and restock again next year.

I was watching the hurricane news yesterday, and was amazed.

destroyed (mobile home park), so I suspect that her neighbors were indeed standing in line for supplies, if they were alive and able to stand.

Last year when Charley hit, it took about three days for all the ice in my freezer to melt completely. Hunting for ice and anything cold to drink was the big objective for those 11 days in August without power ( my windows don't have screens, and sitting outside wasn't an option because the mosquitoes came at a person in clouds). I think the complaining started around day five, because heatstroke was becoming a real issue. Right now the temperature is in the 50s, so it really isn't a bad time of year to be without services (I have no heat in my home, but I slept just fine last night in my 46 degree room).

and I always joke that we are preparing for a famine. I have no pity for these people that expect the Gov. to hold their hands for them.:nopity:

I posted a rant on this thread further down, and I think you'll agree with me. BTW I see that you responded to my post in the "protester in Plam Harbor" thread this morning. I live in Holiday, you live in my neck of the woods?

6. I was incredibly moved by the reports of pre-positioning
of supplies/military/resources for the people of FL before the hurricane, because I can recall no such pre-positioning for we people in Louisiana, altho I remember lip-service lies about prepositioning after Katrina hit. I will always believe that LA was ignored and then mistreated because of our Dem Governor and senator and legislature. I sincerely hope the people of FL get the supplies that they need in a timely manner, and don't resort to that awful, sinful looting that went on by Blacks in New Orleans and Mexicans in Cancun. Yes, I am bitter.

11. the people complaining are
the people who were told to evacuate.......they didn't stock their homes.many mobiles were destroyed.......these people were in shelters.and some out of harms way....

what Jeb and fl. should have done is sit the water and ice stations in these areas up first,.the less hit areas could have waited an extra day........but as with everything in Fl.its ass backwards...what really irks me is Jeb comes on local news and says what a great job he thinks fema and jebs staff have done....

12. No doubt, I live in Florida and its common knowledge that yes
you will get hit by Hurricane, Yes the power will be off for at least 3 days, yes all of the food in the fridge will spoil and that you should have a cooler for of ice. These people are fucktards and probably should just leave FL. if they don't get IT by now.

The residents of FL. that are complaining right now are the lazy ones/ or stupid and hence do not really deserve any kind of help. I mean really folks didn't your mom stop wiping your butt and stopped dressing you a long long long time ago.

And yes I do feel bad for the people who did try to prepare but are still in dire straights, my rant is directed at "you know the morans"

23. I look and wonder ..
which ones of them were blaming the people in NOLA. Have any been thirsty enough or angry enough to steal water or food yet, oh I mean pick up food. Did anyone see the women on CNN in keywest who said she was staying for the hurricane to protect her boat ( this was her birthday present) I wondered if she'd see any more birthdays.

25. A couple of comments:
First, while there are wealthy, middle class and barely surviving non-minorities in southern Florida, there is also a large population of minorities who are wealthy, middle class and barely surviving. They are blacks, central and southern Americans, as well as cubans.

I agree, there was advanced warning about the storm and a relatively small amount of housing destruction. But when there is no power conditions deteriorate quickly. You can bet that many well-to-do residents have portable or back back-up generators.

With no power, you may not have water as pumps run on electricity, you have no refrigeration so even if you bought ice and managed to stock some perishables, at some point, they will spoil. How much water can you reasonably stock up on? Fill the bath tub, get bottled water; but let's say with a family of 4 how long will that last? I'm all for taking care of myself and my family, but I will not criticize those that are in need. I do not know their circumstances, and until I've walked in their shoes I cannot know what they are going through.

As for the Americans in Cancun, I've followed that situation closely. There was an excellent forum where stateside relatives were trying to find out about their loved ones. Many told how their family or friends tied to get flights out during the lead up to Wilma hitting them. However, most flights were already booked with previous reservations.

It's not like the airlines sent extra planes for those who had reservations for later in the week. Some were lucky to get flights out, other weren't. There may have been some who could have gotten out but didn't want to spend the extra money, and I'm sure they regret that decision now.

26. I agree with much of what you say, but I am a Florida resident

as well as you, we have all been through this before and know the routine. Water should not be an issue for at least a week, if your home was not destroyed. All the weathermen here suggest that you fill up tupperware containers (or their equivalent, old Cool Whip tubs, whatever) with water and fill your refrigerator and freezer a day before it is supposed to hit. The lack of empty space in your fridge keeps the contents colder longer, even with the power out. Then when the ice melts, or your fridge is no longer keeping things cold, the melted, cool water is good for drinking. Also, those huge blocks of ice that the containers makes take a long time to melt.

Cleaning and filling your tub should be plenty of water for a long time. When I had no running water for weeks after a hurricane, I disinfected a trash can, and left it out to fill with rain. This was clothes washing, toilet flushing and "bathing" water. All of my neighbors did the same. I am not criticizing those in need, I am just saying that for those who still have homes standing, I am amazed at the desperation I am seeing a mere two days after the storm. Most Florida residents are "How to prepare for a Hurricane" to death in the summer.

NOLA had thousands dead, and deep, deep floodwaters that made a huge percentage of homes unlivable, as well as a killer storm, so I was not surprised to see the masses of people who needed help there. I don't know - I am just surprised, that's all - I figured we had this stuff down.
