Journalism
I'm almost out of the Army, and I want to use my college money to go into journalism. Is anyone here in the profession? Any advice?

2. Not in the profession, but close to it.
An English degree from a good university combined with some experience (college paper) should be enough to get you started somewhere. It's actually one of the only BA's I know of where graduates actually get work in their fields. One of my best friends went to school on a scholarship from a big newspaper company and started as a reporter as soon as he graduated. I drew cartoons for my college paper, which was all in all pretty crappy, but most of the staff from back then are now editors, novelists, reporters etc. all over the country. Seems like a good career choice!

5. Not to be a wet sock in your Army boot of enthusiasm ...
... but I started out in journalism and worked in newspapers for a number of years after college.

It's far from a glamourous profession. If you start out thinking you'll change the world, you're bound to be severely disappointed. Most of the larger newspapers are now part of corporate "chains" of newspapers (Knight-Ridder, ABC/Cap Cities, etc.) and the environments there are extremely restrictive. There are damned few independent newspapers anymore unless you go to smaller markets ... and then you'll have a far smaller audience.

Don't get me wrong because there were times I felt like I made a difference in some small way. But on the hole, working in large-market journalism will grind away any creativity you possess.
