This from AP last night:

"The storm knocked out many of the island's docks, making it difficult for navy ships to arrive. State officials were trying to clear airstrips on Cozumel and nearby Isla Mujeres so that planes could land with aid. President Vicente Fox said the government would send helicopters, as well."

A message that got out from the island by satellite phone (last night):

"She said there are no services on the island...
but the people are alive...
no water, electricity, phone, internet, food...
nothing,
and that all power lines are down
and there are curfews keeping people
off the streets...

"most of the houses and businesses
had their doors and windows
pop out of their houses"

53. an update from the Isla boards, bodes well for our friend....

Apparently, there was 7' of water in el contro and the people had to flee to the south end to the hills of colonia. The ocean broke through the sea wall and split the island in half. Puerto Juarez is devastated and docks on Isla are ripped out. Basically anything on the ocean side in town is pretty much destroyed due to the water surges, wind and rain. Thus far there is no known loss of life thank God. They need food and water. It may take quite a while for power to come back on.

trying to put the Humpty-Dumpty world back together again. Isla isn't the tourist mecca that Cancun is - it's a day trip - so one can imagine that it might be treated like the 9th Ward of NOLA. Maybe I'm projecting - in any case, if it's true that Isla was cut in thirds by the rain - it's no wonder we haven't heard.I only hope that we hear soon.
