"We will not walk in fear of one another." Edward R. Murrow
This administration has been selling fear since the beginning. After 9-11, they amplified this message. They have further divided us as a nation. Moderates are ignored while extreme views get the floor. At times I am not sure that progressive values can be reconciled with the "values" of Chumpy's supporters; those of big business unregulated, defending partisans to the detriment of the country, maintaining the status quo (a way of life that is ultimately unsustainable), the complete disregard for our environment, fostering air and water pollution, denying our responsibility to the plants and animals of this planet, the integration of church and state, racism, and more. I know that I believe in my values and I am sure they believe in theirs. I don't know that they can be reconciled.

Nonetheless, I will not walk in fear of them. Perhaps there is a way to move beyond our differences, to find common ground. I truly hope we can.

8. I'm suprised they didn't think worse of it
not only was it a brilliant portrayal of E.R.Murrow but the whole movie was a shot across the bow of the S.S. Corporate Media... Clooney was looking to light a fire under some journalists ass, lets hope he suceeded..

5. The rest of the quote in context.
"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another.

We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men - not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes that were, for the moment, unpopular."

Edward R. Murrow, "See It Now," CBS News

7. God,what a beautiful quote.
I can't wait to see that movie. Sooner or later, this country will swing from extreme back to the middle again.Americans are uncomfortable with extremes,in and out of politics. That need for moderation and common sense has saved us in the past and it will save us again.Have faith.

11. Indeed. I do have faith. I could use more but I have more than I
thought I did.

It is an awesome quote.

You're right. We don't like extremes.

9. Everyone should see the movie!
Today, Edward R. Murrow wouldn't be allowed to do what he did, say what he said, on See BS. However, it was interesting that they grappled with the same kinds of issues that should be honestly raised by today's media. They argued about where the line between advocacy and reporting should be drawn, and even how the "bottom line" would be affected (yes, that's an issue, much as we'd like for it not to be).

The CBS honchos did argue with Morrow and Friendly, but in the end, they supported them, in spite of the very real dangers.

10. Saw it last night. Excellent!
I will say that it is a little hard to follow if you don't already know who's who and if you are not well versed in the history of the time. I have more impressionistic memories, as I was a young child during the period, but the effects of McCarthyism lasted a long, long time. In fact, I would say that self-censorship and fear of the powerful who have no moral restraint are the primary causes of current complacency. It is safer to say nothing or to pretend that things are not that bad. In that sense the emotional memories of that era are with us still.

The stylistic film-making was interesting, though unusual enough to be slightly distracting. It was also difficult for me to see the way women were treated (accurately for the time) and the smoking--everywhere.

I guess I will just have to see it a few more times in the theater to get the most out of it.

Anybody have any suggestions for good books on the background of Edward R. Murrow and/or the McCarthy era?
