Holy Moly! They LIED About Miers Being Catholic???
How stupid can they be?? This lie is so easily debunked it is embarrassing...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051021/ap_on_go_su_co/miers_religion

DALLAS - The Roman Catholic diocese of Dallas is setting the record straight: Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers has never been a Catholic.

A review of records for such sacraments as baptism, first Eucharist and confirmation found no evidence that Miers or anyone in her immediate family was Catholic, Bronson Havard, a spokesman for the diocese, said Friday.

Acquaintances of Miers have said she worshipped as a Catholic and attended Episcopalian and Presbyterian services. For some 25 years, Miers has been a congregant at Valley View Christian Church where in 1979 she was baptized by full immersion, consistent with the evangelical church's beliefs.

<snip>

After news media reported that Miers, a longtime Dallas lawyer, had attended Catholic church during her childhood, diocesan officials searched their records because they suspected the information was incorrect.

That is why I find this lie so astounding! The nuts in charge obviously have NO CLUE how meticulous the Catholic Church is in record keeping! Amazingly stupid!

9. Yep. Not so sure it was a mistake, though...
Liars. Stinkin' liars. I'm Catholic, too. Pretty idiotic move, I'd say.

Peace.

21. I heard Dobson say it
This article says her 'acquaintances' made the claim that she was Catholic. Dobson obviously listened to the rumor and then was too stupid to check it out before he repeated it.

Good to see Dobson lose credibility, eh?

26. I came back to get married in the church and almost blew it
I had no idea I had to prove my Baptism and then when questioned about children, I almost said, we MAY not want any. The priest said if I said I DID NOT want any, he would have had to kick me out. Jeesh! What we do for out parents sake.

11. exactly
She left the Catholic Church, to the extent she was ever a part of it. Emphasizing that fact hardly is a plus to most Catholics...

14. It sounded as if they were trying to appeal to everyone
Well, she's Catholic, and she's Episcopalian, and she's Presbyterian and if today is Tuesday, that must mean she's a batshit crazy Fundie.

8. And what's the point of this lie, anyway?
Yes, it can be checked, but that's almost beside the point. What possible advantage could they get from promulgating the lie in the first place? A more sympathetic review of her nomination from Rick Santorum and Patrick Leahy? It just makes no sense.

10. who gives a shit? waste of time
It was reported that she attended Catholic Church as a child. That hasn't been shown to be untrue. Its not as if she's holding herself out to be a Catholic now. If someone goes to a house of worship and thinks of themselves as a member of that faith, most people arent' going to think that person is a liar because they didn't go through all the steps that are spelled out by that faith. I know non-Jews who have married Jews and they observe Jewish holidays, are raising their children as Jews, participate in synagogue activities and generally hold themselves out as being Jewish, but they've never formally converted. But I've never seen anyone in the congregation suggest that person is a "liar".

Maybe some orthodox Catholics will be offended, but as I said, she's not holding herself out to be Catholic now -- do you think they will think less of her because she left the church after not formally joining it than would be the case if she had left it after becoming "Catholic".

There are so many more substantial concerns about Miers -- her lack of experience and qualifications, for starters, that making an issue of this is just a silly distraction from the reasons people should be opposing her. It ends up becoming an easily knocked down straw man that strengthens her to the extent people make a big deal of it.

24. You have a point about more substantial concerns
But there is more to being a Jew than going to temple, and more to being a Catholic than going to mass. She and Bush have made a big deal about her faith; her conversion to an Evangelical faith, so I think that this criticism is valid.

I do agree it is a minor point; hardly worth headlines. Unfortunately, we as a country tend to fixate on such things. America the trivial.

12. Why would they bother?
Although it muddies the Harriet waters even more.

One explanation could be she was never baptized or confirmed, just attended? But that doesn't happen very often.

22. Now they have the best of both worlds
They put this little white lie out in the beginning and it has pacified the Catholic base. The realization won't make much of a rip in the water, except in the fundamentalist community where they believe there should be a Catholic hunting season.

In short, they pacified the Catholics with the leak, and the resulting small press coverage about the lie will further pacify the fundamentalists. It's a win-win.
