Amazing article in The American Conservative
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=109&topic_id=23420&mesg_id=23421

Franken read from this today, and no_hypocrisy found the link for me. This article in a conservative magazine cites corruption of our "provisional authority" in Iraq that surprises even me. It's definitely worth a read.

I plan to rub any repugs nose in this over and over and over the next time I hear "tax and spend Democrat."

2. The conservatives see the writing on the wall
They are in damage mode, distancing themselves from the "neo" cons.

Theyre all the same. The AmerConserv. whored for the pro war crowd and now they wanna act like it wasnt them who did this. It was those neocons.

There was no difference a few years ago. They were one in the same. Now they wanna run from what they brought .

8. Good one!
I also like "borrow and spend Republicans." This goes way beyond that, though.

17. Every member of Congress needs to read this
I would like to see a copy of this magazine on the desk of every member of congress.

They looked the other way while this happened. In the mean time, they have cut every program for the poor and middle class they can find.

19. Add Pat Buchanan's Suicide by Free Trade article for a double-whammy
The last paragraph is priceless

"Indeed, if the issue is jobs, Republicans ought to be thrown out. For not only are they not creating them, they have no idea how to stop exporting them. In their hearts, some of them think it a good thing. They are like the doctors of old who sincerely believed bleeding the patient was the way to get rid of the disease because that is what their textbooks and wise men told them"

Truly American Conservative magazine hoists themselves upon their own petard ! Truth isn't treating them kindly.

20. Why does this sound familiar?
<snip>

Some of the corruption grew out of the misguided neoconservative agenda for Iraq, which meant that a serious reconstruction effort came second to doling out the spoils to the war’s most fervent supporters. The CPA brought in scores of bright, young true believers who were nearly universally unqualified. Many were recruited through the Heritage Foundation website, where they had posted their résumés. They were paid six-figure salaries out of Iraqi funds, and most served in 90-day rotations before returning home with their war stories. One such volunteer was Simone Ledeen, daughter of leading neoconservative Michael Ledeen. Unable to communicate in Arabic and with no relevant experience or appropriate educational training, she nevertheless became a senior advisor for northern Iraq at the Ministry of Finance in Baghdad. Another was former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer’s older brother Michael who, though utterly unqualified, was named director of private-sector development for all of Iraq.

22. "Paul Bremer ... had a slush fund in cash of more than $600 million."
Let me get this straight. They removed the first guy and replaced him with Bremer because Bremer was "telegenic." The Six Hundred Million Dollar Face

Culture of corruption, indeed.

23. 1.5 BILLION in cash?????
from the article:

Money also disappeared in truckloads and by helicopter. The CPA reportedly distributed funds to contractors in bags off the back of a truck. In one notorious incident in April 2004, $1.5 billion in cash that had just been delivered by three Blackhawk helicopters was handed over to a courier in Erbil, in the Kurdish region, never to be seen again. Afterwards, no one was able to recall the courier’s name or provide a good description of him.

BILLION? BILLION????????

25. The military auditors left last year
"The DoD Inspector General doesn’t have anybody in Iraq auditing the spending. Nope, pulled them out a year ago. But, that also means there isn’t anybody in Iraq who can make a spending report public either. Hold on to your hat now, cuz it gets even better… there IS one person from the DoD IG office in Iraq, they’re there to “develop an anti-corruption process for the Iraqi government.”
