Company Develops Plant That Sprouts Custom Messages

UPDATED: 7:56 am EDT October 19, 2005

A company in Spokane, Wash., has developed a plant that releases text messages during the seven- to 10-day germination process that shows up on the plant's bud, according to a Local 6 News report.

The Amazing Message Plant was discovered by the president of Miracle Products and displays personalized words.

Local 6 News showed a plant with the message "I love you" on the bud.

"You can do all kinds of custom messages," Tony Berendes said. "The 'I love you' (plant) -- this is our initial launch but we're going do kids' names and promotional opportunities.

8. Somebody wants it to look like it was done with an IBM Selectric but I can
tell you for a fact that this particular font with proportional spacing was not available on a Selectric. Looks like Times Courier to me. I smell a rat.

5. This is a hoax
I don't have any proof yet, but are they saying that they can produce perfectly formed letters on living plant tissue (with nice 3D effect, to!) by genetics alone?

If we've reached that level of genetic manipulation, then this company is criminally wasting it's technology on trivial pursuits.

13. Look real. NOT genetic manipulation. Closer to branding.
The plant looks like it is of the bean family. This could be done by the message being printed on the side of the bean with something that kills a few of the cells beneath each letter. Then when the bean sprouts the message would appear on the psuedo-leaves. Look closely at the picture and you will see the first true leaves between the two pods.

15. I agree.
I don't think this is any kind of genetic manipulation at all. It's sort of a plant tattoo. Cute, but no big deal.

16. Could be real
Obviously, this isn't a genetically-engineered plant; nobody's got that kind of technology yet.

This might be real, though; if they are writing the words on the leaf while it's still in what corresponds to an embryonic state. They haven't developed a new plant, just a new way of writing on plants.

Edited on Wed Oct-19-05 12:06 PM by IanDB1
I'm wrong 1/12 of the time, but I have a strong suspicion that this is a hoax.

A pretty funny one though!

"The Amazing Message Plant was discovered by the president of Miracle Products (Tony Berendes) and displays personalized words."

I want to spread seeds with plants that say, "Go fuck yourself, Mr. Cheney!"

On edit:

I can't find anything on (google search):
"Tony Berendes" and "Miracle Product"
"Tony Berendes" and Spokane

Miracle Products LLC Creates a One-of-a-Kind Plant That's Sure to Kick Start
All Types of Relationships

SPOKANE, Wash., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Miracle Products, LLC announces
the release of the Amazing Message Plant(TM) (http://www.message-plant.com), a plant
that blossoms with a secret message that's sure to kick start all types of
relationships.
The first plant in the series develops with an "I LOVE YOU" message on the
bud. After initially watering the plant, the whole germination process takes
about 7-10 days and the surprise message is revealed. These twining-type
plants are virtually maintenance free, only requiring indoor sunlight and
occasional watering. The Amazing Message Plant(TM) can grow as high as 2-4
feet.
"Our product is a much more creative way to express a feeling to a friend
or loved one than sending common gifts such as candy or flowers, and everyone
loves to be surprised, from kids to adults," says Tony Berendes president of
Miracle Products, LLC who discovered the product a year ago. "You get daily
inspiration by watching these plants grow; it's much more exciting than
opening a fortune cookie."

How the Buyer Keeps the Surprise
When initially purchased, only the buyer of the Amazing Message Plant(TM)
knows what message will appear on the plant compliments of a handy sticker
affixed to the packaging. All the buyer has to do is remove the sticker before
giving the gift to a friend or loved one. The recipient of the gift is truly
astonished when the message is revealed.

Universal Appeal
According to the Society of American Florist's latest survey in 2004, the
U.S. floral market generated $19.5 billion and according to Market
Research.com U.S. sales of greeting cards were valued at $7.5 billion in 2004.
"The Amazing Message Plant(TM) provides consumers the benefit of both worlds
-- a greeting card and a thriving plant," adds Berendes.
Different versions and different messages of the Amazing Message Plant(TM)
will coincide with calendar events such as Christmas, Valentines, Mother's
Day, Father's Day, Independence Day, and Back to School. There will be year
round plants that express everyday sentiments such as "GET WELL," "I MISS
YOU," and "GOOD LUCK."

26. See my post #13. I explain how it is done.
The concept is pretty simple. Not a big deal. It is very similar to the colored chicks that used to be sold at Easter.

Years ago, it was popular to soak an egg in die, and then hatch the egg. The chick would be the color of the dye. After the chick lost it's baby pinfeathers and the real feathers grew in the chich would be it's normal color. This technology is nothing more than some writing on the seed that shows up on the psuedo-leaves, NOT on the real leaves.

27. Okay, not a "hoax," but I need to read more carefully...
It looks like nowhere was it suggested by the company or the media that this was done by genetic manipulation.

Not a hoax, just poor reading skills on my part.

But it at least got me interested enough to look into it and learn something.

It's pretty cool anyway!

I think I can make these!
