1. Try this as a jumping off point
http://www.intellectualpoison.com/WalMartisPureEvil.html

Plenty of bullet points on the first page with lots of links on the left hand side to take you elsewhere. This may be what you are looking for.

5. some stores provide "counseling" to new employees - on how to get welfare
in terms of what local public $ for health and food assistance are availabe. That is they not only don't pay well (and often schedule folks just UNDER the # of hours where folks would get benefits) - but they then coach them how to take public assistance.

4. Here is an email that I have created...
I keep this and send it out to my Walmart loving friends on occasion. Please feel free to change it for your own use. I sometimes refresh the links. The links are good as of 10/05/2005 when I last sent it out.

Maybe so, but taken in total with their other issues, it just adds justification to the evil empire that Walmart has created. Women are treated differently then men, paid less, and promoted, far less then men. http://www.walmartclass.com/public_home.html

Child labor is used to create their clothes in countries such as Bangaledesh. http://www.1worldcommunication.org/Walmart.htm

And child labor laws are broken in the United States.

They are a threat to the environment in every location.

Their goal is to re-define the local economy by undercutting the prices in the local stores, usually owned and operated by Mom and Pops. http://walmartwatch.com/

The force their vendors into deals that they find that they can not get out of.

Walmart has more employees on state and federal medicaid and foodstamps then any other company in the nation.

They are now the number one importer of Chinese made goods. What happened to Buy American?

Don't forget that if you work at Walmart, in some areas, you are not allowed to take a lunch. If your hours approach 39 hours, you are clocked out and made to work as long as they need you. The justification that this happens every where, no longer flies. Get me the names of other retailers that do it, and I'll get them added to the Action List that I subscribe to.

Just because they save you a buck in groceries, it ends up costing you more in taxes to support their lower income workers, loss of environment, loss of competition from other retailers. You, as a woman, are supporting them in their effort to keep female wages lower then men's wages, and to allow lower rates of promotion, everytime you walk into the store. As a mother, you are purchasing items made with the small hands of foreign children working for pennies an hour.

Do others do it, yes! We are getting to them. CVS does not support a woman's right to Plan B contraception. That is another active boycott. Especially in the mid-west, that boycott is growing every month. Now that Plan B may be released for over the counter, it will become a hotter topic.

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

6. First tell her to check prices closely, then shop around
She will soon realize that Walmart's 'lowest prices' is bullshit, or that low prices means shit quality. Once you've broken that barrier, then go into the way they treat employees and are fucking the economy and the future etc.

9. I've tried and it's almost impossible with some people
all they care about is that Walmart offers lower prices and it doesn't matter if it's because of slave labor of driving small town
America to extinction. But Good Luck to you anyway.

10. I'm doing reasonably well, but what are people who
can not afford anything better than Walmart to do? Like it or not, their prices ARE cheaper. Much of their stuff is crap, but there are a lot of people who just can not afford anything better.

22. Of course it bothers people
But I haven't seen anyone come up with a realistic answer as to what to do about it, as it appears they aren't violating any laws in regard to employees.

11. There's been a lot of good replies in this thread
about Walmart's crappy business practices.

But ultimately I can't blame Walmart when they operate their business within the law.

Isn't the governments fault that:

We don't have a liveable minimum wage?

That too many working poor people have no health insurance?

That the law encourages companies to hire people for part-time work instead of full time?

That companies are pressured to move their manufacturing overseas?

There have been several instances where Walmart has broke the law, and they deserve to be called on the carpet for those things. Locking people into stores, hiring illegal workers, discriminating against female employees, etc. But most of the points brought up in this thread have more to do with bad labor laws than Walmart.

Oh by buying their way around laws? There's no doubt in my mind that they financed changes in laws to fit their needs.

Yeah, keep defending their sleezy actions because it's "within the law"

21. I'm not exactly defending them
I'm just pointing out that the core problem is the labor laws in our country.

And if they are buying their way around laws, then the legislators making those laws need to be voted out.

13. I recently opened a co-workers eyes about WM.
She's gone back to school at night to work on her degree, and is taking an English class right now. They have a paper to write to help develop research and writing skills. There was a list of topics for her to choose from, and she selected "Is Walmart Too Big?".

She's a Dem, but still thought that it was okay to shop WM. ("Well, we don't make a lot of money - I have to shop around for the best bargain.")

She came in last week on Wednesday and asked if I could point her in the right direction with a couple of links about WM, which I did, and then I left her alone. Friday morning, I asked how the research was coming for her paper, and she blurted out, in one long, drawn-out, run-on sentence (I don't think she stopped for a breath), "Oh my god I don't think I'll ever go there again I can't believe how bad they treat their employees they're an evil evil corporation no wonder you won't shop there I'm sorry I ever doubted what you said about them!"

She's used to listening to me about how bad WM is for all of us, and she's somewhat open-minded. She just needed a "push" to wake her up. Most of my other co-workers just flat-out refuse to believe anything else, and will continue to shop there until there's nowhere else to go.

Wal-Mart asked to delay store opening

Attorneys representing Native Hawaiians have asked Wal-Mart to postpone its scheduled Oct. 13 opening until unearthed remains, now boxed and stored on site, can be reburied on a corner of the store property.

Wal-Mart officials seem unlikely to comply with the request, sent Wednesday by the Native Hawaiian Legal Corp.

"It's untimely and unreasonable, in our view," said Wal-Mart spokeswoman Cynthia Lin, who added that the remains have been handled carefully and are now in an air-conditioned shipping container. "Because the timeline for reinterment is not known, postponing the opening until reburial would be to postpone it indefinitely."

23. they have a radio ad running now about how great they are
its all about how great it is to work at walmart and how happy their employees are. what i noticed was that there is no sales pitch, or talk about prices, just 30 seconds about how great walmart employment is.

i guess the press is getting to them.
