What would you do if Clark won the Democratic nomination?
So people seem to believe that Bush is better than Clark on this board. I doubt their loyality when they make that claim. I believe Clark will win the nomination because he is an outsider that is a war hero.

Winning requires votes. I think Clark will bring lots of Independant votes and even more Republican votes than any other candidate. Polls also show Clark winning, and even more important than that, he is beating Bush in southern states that would slaughter Bush in the electoral college.

So how about it. How would you vote if Clark wins the nomination?
Is your statement of having an extreme lifetime loyal Democrat win the nomination more important than your need to slaughter Bush in the General Election?

Mike

2. I would vote for him, of course
I am not of the spoiled child my-way-or-no-way mindset. I do not like what Team Bush is doing and voting to get him out is important to me.

I have asked a few folks who support other candidates if they would vote for Dean if he got the nom, I still await my answer.

and I am currently supporting Kerry rather strongly. However, I would, as I have in many past elections, be voting AGAINST someone (Bush), not FOR someone (Dean). Lesser of two evils and all that.

6. I would congratulate Bush on his re-election
because the day Clark gets the nomination, that's the day Bush has it in the bag. With the slightest encouragrment Clark would have joined the administration and become as big a cheerleader as he is now a critic of its policies. And now the best the party can do for its nominee is a man who has been a democrat for less then a week ?

The puppetmsters of the DNC/DLC have a very poor record the last several years of providing demcrats a reason to vote FOR democratic candidates. Clark is just more of the same.

Btw, picture the commercials running the video every half hour for weeks before the election of Clark panicing under press questioning, shouting " HELP ME MARY ". Chauncey Gardener was more credible.

15. I'd vote for Clark
And I support his run. I'm a Democrat and I will vote for whomever the Dem nominee turns out to be. Period.

BTW, I believe everyone is entitled to an opinion. However, I think that you obviously haven't done a lot of research on Clark or you would understand that he has always been a Democrat. In 2001, he voiced an opinion on who whistle ass had on his "team" because Clark had worked with Rummy, Powell and Cheney under 2 other administraitons while in the military. He said there was "good team" in place, but never praised whistle ass. However, after 9/11, things changed, as did his opinion of the people he once thought were making a good team. He went to West Point because he was moved by JFK's speech "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". And while he readily admits to voting for Reagan and Bush Sr, he voted for Gore in 2000. And after the Florida fiasco, he now wonders if any of his absentee votes cast during his military career ever actually counted.

Would you say the same things about someone like Sen. Jeffords, who was duly elected as a Republican, but chose to become an Indepdent because of what his party was doing to this country? Is it not within anyone of us to change our minds or our thoughts on anything or anyone at any time?? And if you would read Clark's stand on the issues or even take an hour or so to listen to him speak, answer questions and react to any and all critics, perhaps you might have a better understanding of this man before judging him.

I believe that not any one candidate is perfect, none of them are. Each one has something that most of us either disagree with or find intolerable to support or we just can't abide them personally. But if we all do our "homework" perhaps then we can stop bickering, labeling and making judgments on any of them. They are all on the record and that is what I believe should matter.

Support whomever you believe in, that is your right.

JMHO, of course.

41. I'm sorry but that's crap
As a lifelong Dem, I have VERY legitimate concerns about Clark. While it bothers me a little that he voted for Nixon and Reagan and was not a registered Dem, I am more concerned about his praise of this misadministration. ANY MEMBER OF IT!!!!

Funny that we all knew early on how evil Cheney, Rummy, Wolfowitz, Rice, et al were, but Clark is expected to get a pass for his praise of them? Not from this Dem. He has a long way to prove himself to me and many Dem activists. We'll see how things go over the next few months, but until then, I refuse to give some sort of loyalty oath to a complete unknown.

The puppetmsters of the DNC/DLC have a very poor record the last several years of providing demcrats a reason to vote FOR democratic candidates. Clark is just more of the same.

You mean the same DLC/DNC that backed PRESIDENT CLINTON and duly elected REAL PRESIDENT GORE?

I don't much care for the tactics of the DLC, but if you are going to bash a candidate, you need better reasons than what you posted.

If you disagree with Clark on policy issues (and, contrary to many brainless twits, he has expressed his opinion on several issues), that's ok with me. You're intitled to your opinion. But just to smear the guy, just to assassinate his character, based on nothing but your own prejudices -- this is what freepers and dittoheads and other elements of the VRWC do. If Clark wins the nomination I hope he wins. I don't believe however that winning is everything. Bush talks centrist acts right. Clinton talked moderate / liberal walked centre right. Where will Clark walk?

I've seen Tony Blair sacrifice the Labour party principles on the alatar of electability. I don't suggest the Democratic party go the same way.

38. My vote depends on the deals made with Dean
Dean is a major factor in the Dem race. If he's shunted aside or given only token power in the Dem Party, I'll remain undecided until Election Day and then make a decision to either vote for Clark or write in someone else.

Clark is a flim-flam man and he will destroy the Democratic Party from the inside out.

If Dean is on the ticket with Clark, I most likely will vote for that ticket, but donating to the Clark-Dean ticket is in doubt, unless I feel that Dean can get those funds.

If Dean leads the ticket, even with Clark as 2nd, I will vote for that ticket and donate to that campaign.

45. Clark claims to be a Democrat
yet he also voted for Nixon and Reagan, praised Bush and the PNAC crowd at a GOP fundraiser in 2001, continued to support Bush's war in March of 2003, told a reporter after he had entered the Dem Prez race that he was a registered Democrat but in fact was not registered as one (Clark lied) -- he was listed as Independent.

Clark has no record as a civilian politician to evaluate. He turned down an offer from the Arkansas Democrats to run for Arkansas governor in 2000. Clark went from being a general to an employee for a company that lobbies Congress for the MIC and he didn't resign from that job until 2 weeks after announcing his run for Dem Prez nominee.

I don't have all the links because these issues have been talked about frequently on this board. Just scan DU's Political & Campaign and General Discussion forums. You'll find them all there or in the archives.

55. Vote for him.
If people don't think he's "Democrat Enough" to vote for, then why, in all logic, would they go and vote for a ReTHUG Shill like King Ralph?

I'll vote for whoever my party puts up against Bush, I just hope it's NOT Lieberman....

59. I'd vote for him, silly!
We've had this same discussion about Dean...yes there are probably some people here who hate Dean or Clark or Kerry -- and definitely Lieberman -- so much that they would sit out, or vote 3rd party, but I think the majority of us will fall in line. Certainly many people will be upset after the nomination when their guy doesn't win, but everyone will come to their senses quickly and get on board.

Remember that by then the Bush campaign will be in full swing, and it will be ugly. That will be enough motivation for nearly all of us.

Can't speak for the few raging haters (particularly of Dean and/or Clark), not much we can do about that, they appear to be blinded by their hatred.

66. Anti-Clark voters: Please read this and tell us why you'd rather see Bush
re-elected than have this man in office. It really defies all logic....

http://www.issues2000.org/Wesley_Clark.htm

Wesley Clark:

Supports University of Michigan's affirmative action plan. (Jun 15)

"I'm concerned about the lock-up policy, the 3-strikes policy, putting people in jails and the way we've treated people in prison. We've got to look seriously at the American penal system and what it does when it returns people to the streets."

Supports universal health coverage

“We went into Iraq under false pretenses. There was deceptive advertising; you'd be taking to the Better Business Bureau if you bought a washing machine the way we went into the war in Iraq.”

Compared Bush to Nixon in abusing his power to bully Congress and US allies. "This is an administration which has moved in a way we have not seen any administration since Nixon to abuse executive authority to scheme, manipulate, intimidate and maneuver.”

Full sunshine review of PATRIOT Act. (Jun 19)

Supports funding for all-day kindergarten

Establish 18:1 student-teacher ratio for grade school. (Mar 1999)

Decries lack of funding for No Child Left Behind. (Apr 28)

“The way to deal with Castro is to send Cuba American tourists, American goods and American farm products. There could be no better way to deal with this last vestigial form of Communism than to turn American business and American agriculture loose on them.”

Work with the International Criminal Court. (Jul 2002)

"We've found many times in our experience that it's best to use force only as a last resort."

”Why are so many here in America hesitant to speak out and ask questions? We're going to ask those hard questions. And in a time of war, we're going to ask those questions in the highest sense of patriotism. We are going to hold the administration accountable for its policies and results.”

Disturbed that we suspended habeus corpus for War on Terror. (Mar 23)

would consider cutting defense spending if elected, he said. "We are trapped in .....an endless occupation" of Iraq".

"we should be very reluctant to use force. It has incredible, difficult and unintended consequences, which we are once again beginning to see as we deal with the situation in Iraq."

Invest 3% of GDP on development assistance abroad. (Nov 2001)

Supports ban on assault weapons

Immigration is vital to prosperity. (Jun 17)

I am very pro-immigration. (Jun 27)

The military needs to reconsider the "don't ask, don't tell" policy for gay service members.

$5T tax cuts for the rich are legalized theft. (Jun 20)

Supports redistribution by progressive taxation. (Jun 19)

Supports a "freeze" on Bush's tax cuts that have yet to take effect for people earning $150,000 or more.

Need Marshall Plan for Middle East and Afghanistan. (Jun 17)

We went into Iraq under false pretenses. (Aug 17)

Israel: bring in Syria and Iran into peace talks. (Jun 17)

NATO was the reason for our victory in Kosovo. (Sep 2002)

Palestinians decided to return to terrorism after 2000. (Mar 2002)

Solution to terrorism is not bullets but world community. (Oct 2001)

He is definately not my first choice, but considering that I believe it would be unwise for any third party to front their candidates right now. The focus must be to get rid of Bush in 2004 and kick them out of the White House.

Bush vs Clark, that is an easy vote for Clark. I have only seen Clark speak on one townhall meeting on CSPAN, but he seemed to have all the right answers and said a lot of things I was thinking.

I think the negative things about him praising Bush really irrelevant. The fact remains he said that early in 2001 and that was before Bush had done anything (or started dismantling this country ;)) A lot of people who voted for Bush then want their votes back. Why should Clark be racked through the coals for a similar premature opinion. A lot of people have waked up to Bush, including Clark.

So lets not punish Clark for something said 2 years ago before the things started happening. He has seen the bad Bush has done just like a lot of us and wants to undo them.

it would be the day my party gave up the ideology that drew me to join. I would no longer want to be a member of a party that elected a whistle ass praising, PNAC loving, privacy denying, NED mercenaring, SOA teaching, orgasmic warring, lying DLC shill.

My final act as a member of the Democratic Party, would be to write in Dean.

But back to reality - I will not have to worry about that happening. clark will not get the nom.

are more important than getting rid of Bush.

The Greens thought this way too, you know.

Utter arrogance. Getting rid of Bush, turning this country around and ending the neocon lies and acts of treason to the American people are THE priorities in 2004.

That said, I'll vote for any Dem over Bush. Even Lieberman (though I would not admit it). If you want to vote for someone other than the Dem nominee (whoever it may be), well, you might as well vote for Bush.

This was a hypothetical question and unrealistic, as far as I am concerned. I truly do not believe clark will win the Democratic nom, since I truly do not believe he is a Democratic.

..make an infinitely better president than Howard Dean would. I believe Clark will overtake Dean, if hasn't already. He's extremely electable and the only thing stopping him from being president is Howard Dean, who for some reason has gotten a ton of support even though he's definitely not an ideal candidate (neither is Clark, of course, but Dean really makes me nervous).

a message against Bush. IMHO, if it weren't for Dean, the Democratic leadership would be putting up some sacrificial lamb.

Clark would make a good president and a better campaigner after some experience. Right now, IMHO, Clark would be another Dukakis/McGovern war-hero who would lose due to lack of funding, message articulation or some minor "Willie Horton" scandal that the GOP would repeat ad nausium.

Dean has already been vetted for 11 years by the many GOP opponents that he has easily beaten. Clark is untested.

OnEdit: Of course I'd vote for Clark in the general election. Heck, I support him for Dean's Vice President.
