School buses to use oil from cafeteria

The 10 o'clock news reported that the school buses in Gaston County, North Carolina will use vegetable oil from the cafeterias in their school buses. The report stated it is the first county in NC to do this. This could really explode as a practice as the budget for school buses was set for the school year before the new reality set in.

What I would like to know is where all the used oil in restaurants goes now? It seems like there would be a business that went around and collected it when it saves $3 a gallon.

A related question has to ask if it is legal to add vegetable oil from the shelf to your diesel car considering its effect on gas taxes and all. It is illegal in the UK and they do arrest people for using vegetable oil because it cuts them out of the huge taxes that make fuel twice as expensive there as here.

There is, in fact, a healthy trade in used food oil. The restaurants like it because sometimes they have to pay a disposal fee to get rid of it.
